MELON MEN TO PROFIT
BY THE LATE FREEZE.
8hort Fruit Crop to Make Water
melons and Cantaloupes More In
Demand.’
The cantaloupe men express the be-
lief that as the result of the damage
to the fruit crop and the consequent
curtailment of the yield of peaches,
pears, plums and perhaps other fruits
of the section, there will be larger de
mand than usual for cantaloupes and
watermelons.
The fruit men were very sanguine
of a bumper crop until the freeze of
the early part of tho week occurred.
Now that the yield has been short
ened, it Is practically certain that the
"vegetable fruits,” ns cantaloupes and
watermelons are sometimes called, will
enjoy greater popularity than would
otherwise have been the case.
The prospect Is good for a fine crop
of cantaloupes. The acreage will be
about as large as it was last year, and
the watermelon acreage will not be
Increased. This will be a yedr when
the melon growers will profit by the
misfortune of the fruit men.
