Bo holds up to tiio ad miration of the tyoNd the wonderful buildings which he? has constructed and thinks himself unrivaled ns an archi tect, but “he who teaches man knowl edge has Instructed the smallest Insects In the art at building and has thus an ticipated the works of man as an archi tect." They who builded tho tower of Babel thought their Invention of turn ing earth into stone a most wonderful discovery, but the white nnt and tho busy little bee had practiced this art from the carlleBt days. The great math ematician Instructed the tiny bee how to bnlld Its first cell In the manner which combines the greatest amount of strength with the least material. In stinct, which may be called perpetual memory, haB preserved the knowledge thus communicated, and the art has been practiced by the countless myri ads of their descendants In all climes and countries. The little bee has been engaged In staring away the honey In these hexagonal cells, constructing the cells of wax and placing within them tho bee bread, a paste made of pollen and honey, for the food of the young. In each of these cells tho queen bee de posits an egg. Some of the bees sur round their nests with down collected from the leaves of plants to serve as a nonconductor of beat, to guard against changes of temperature. Nature taught the Inferior orders of animals carpentry, taught them to di vide their houses Into, various apart ments, to construct domes, arches, staircases and colonnades and to ex cavate tunnels. Mr. H. S. Holland returned yester day afternon from Birmingham, where he attended the convention of tho Southern Tri-State Photographic Asso ciation. As reported in Friday's Herald, Mr Holland won the highest honor sought at the convention by the most success ful photographic artists in the states of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. The “grand portrait class” calls for the highest grade of work done with the camera, and success in this field is most eagerly sought by photograph- Agalnst the keenest competition of scores of rivals In his profession, Mr. Holland bore off the first prize in this class. He exhibited eight pictures, and they were the center of interest during the. convention. They were passed up on by a board of award composed of some of the most noted photographic experts In the country, and his victory is all the more significant on this ac count. He would easily have captured other prizes, but after' receiving the grand portrait award he withdrew from competition In all the other classes. Mr. Holland brought home with him, as a trophy of his victory, a handsome loving cup adorned with a blue ribbon. In the course of a few days he will display in a window at his studio on Jackson street the trophy and the'pic tures that won It, It- is a singluar fact that the three artists who won first, second and third awards have been residents of this city, having had studios here, the three being Mr. Holland, first prize; E. Jungqrmann, now of Columbus, sec ond prize; and W. T. Kuhns, now of Atlanta, third prize. Since his return home Mr. Holland has been busy receiving the congratu lations oi his friends. The scarlet hangings of the ancient city of Tyre excited the admiration of the then known world, /but there was a little Insect that knew the art, long before the celebrated Tyrian dyo was discovered, of hanging the walls of its cell with tapestry of a scarlet more brilliant than that of Tyre. Selecting tfle scarlet petals of the poppy, the upholsterer bee cuts small, oval pieces ns neatly as if done with a pair of scissors, seizes the pieces be tween her legs and carries them to tier nest. She overlays them three or four In thickness, fitting the pieces very dextrously, and thus hanging her nest all around with this splendid scarlet tapestry. In this beautiful nest her eggs are bntehed. Men have been nges in bringing pop ulous cities to tlnilr fullest 'extent, but the white ants require only n few months to build a erty containing n much larger number of Inhabitants than Babylon In ull Its glory.
