An Affecting Scene at the
Wheeler Memorial-Gen.
Gordon’s Widow and Head
of Grand''Army Meet
The Victor Talking
Machines Are the Best.
From ttao Atlanta Constitution.
An affecting scene, which brought
tears to the eyes of a score or more
persons, occurred yesterday afternoon
on the- stage of the Grand Just after
the close of the Wheeler memorial ex
ercises.
In one of the boxes Mrs. Gordon,
widow of General John B. Gordon/
had sat during the exercises and fre
quently she pressed a handkerchief
to her eyes. Upon the conclusion of
the magnificent speech of Corporal
James Tanner, commander-in-chtef of
the Grand Army of the Republio, Sirs.
Gordon requested Fire Chief W. R.
Joyner, of Atlanta, to bring Corporal
Tanner to her after the benediction.
Corporal Tanner was just leaving
the stage when Chief Joyner was In
troduced to him.
“Mrs. - Gordon wishes to meet! you,
sir,” said Chief Joyner to the distin
guished Grand Army man.
"Mrs. General John B. Gordon?” he
replied. “I so want to meet her. Take
me to her." ,
Mrs. Gordon had in the meantime
walked upon the stage.* Neither''she
nor Corporal Tanner spoke when the
Introduction, was made. He simply
caught both her hands in his and held
them'there. For a half minute they
stood face to face, each looking into
the eyes of the other. Silence was
eloquent. Mrs. Gordon was pale, but
calm, while Corporal Tanner was try
ing to master his emotion. ,
He was first to break the silence.
. "I can’t say anything,” he said, and
the tears wore glistening in his eyes.
“I knew you loved him, and I want
ed to' meet you,” answered Mrs! Gor
don, and as she spoke she gave way
to her emotion.
.That was all they said to each other..
Every one who witnessed the scene
was in tears. A hundred or more
ladies and gentlemen, all elderly,
crowded around Corporal Tanner and
an Informal reception upon the stage
of the opera house followed.

and wagons and drays are taking cir
cuitous routes to get to the city and
to the depot from the city, just from
.force of habit. But the paving Is.
finished. A iew places will be patched
up, a few bricks that have not worn
well will be displaced. by good ones,
but tills Is about all. * The pavers have
rolled down their sleeves, put bn their
coats, wiped the dust and dirt from
their faces, and they now apear on
the streets as gentlemen of leisure,
for the time being. It took the pavers
a long time to get through, but they
certainly had to ' run up against
enough tough propositions.' They
were assailed with about every con
ceivable kind of obstacle. They had
fights, fighting the elements .among
other things, had Internal dissension,
trouble with the railroads, and all
else that goes to make a street paver’s
life miserable. But the paving cer
tainly does look good, If it did take
so long to be put down.
