Tuesday night,
I Was. to the crowd a very novel sight.
The Boy tried in vuln to get the Cow
to stand,
But the Cow was not In humor, and
he yelled, to bent tho band;
“This old Cow belongs to the Enter
prise Store!”
Of course, the little fellow was all In
a flutter,
Or perhaps he might have said a little
bit more
About the richness and quality of the

The War the Toothbrush Was at Vint
Regarded.
Colonial diaries and letters make It
plain that our unfortunate ancestors
suffered much from jumping ‘tooth
aches, swelled faces and the early loss
or forcible extraction of teeth which-at
a later period might hnve been saved
to render their owners many years of
further service. No wonder, since the
cure of the teeth was little understood,
and tliut little often but negligently
practiced.
Toothpicks were known) the .tooth
brush was not, although rough' Substi
tutes were employed, made of flatten
ed sticks, split and pounded at one end
to a stiff, fibrous fringe. Toothbrushes
wbcu Drat introduced were regurded
us by no means Important accessories
to the toilet, but rather as minor lux
uries and suitable for women only.
The diary of a London merchant
trading to the colonies bus this entry: •
“Bought a Toothbrush for my wife,
whe-h, used together with salte water,
very strong, and u wasslie of Herbs,
she Is told will keep her Teethe from
fulling out or getting hollowe. The
suite and Herbes may well prove
strengthening to her Gummes wch.
are tender, hut for the brush It Seemes
but u silly Toy, hardly like to ware
the worth of Its price and Bcarce clenn-
ley nuve when new. But she must
hove It, belug a new thing late from
France."
In the famous collection of the let
ters of the Veruey family, as well, the
toothbrush is referred to as “an ele-
gunt trifle, now used by the ladies of
Paris.”
But, when Sally Annls, a colonial
belle, wrote of It to her sister she hud,
like the London merchant’s wife, goad
hopes of Its proving of mare then
trilling value. Her seafaring father
hud Just brought her one, along with
other gifts.

Closing of Pekin's Gate.
From' the PCkln and Tientsin News.
To this day the great gateB In the
walla of Pekin are closed every even
ing with the queer ceremonies that
have been observed for centuries past
The daily performance is marked with
a due ceremony which la quaint and
full of interest to the Intelligent on
looker, as the closing by no means slgt
nlfles the mere bringing together of
the heavy wooden doors and the bar
ring of the Emperor’s highway against
all comers.
At the appointed hour a preliminary
signal is given by a large gong or Iron
shield being struck with a big Iron
bar fifty times In such quick success
ion as almost to defy calculation and
this Is followed by 100 double strokes
commencing slowly and dreamily for
the first half and gradually Increasing
to half hurricane rapidity and this set
of 100 blows Is repeated In precisely
the same fashion three times. When:
the third and last cycle of gong strokes’
Is entered on a number of old and, at
this season, very much^ bewadded and
muffled up old Charlies start a series
or discordant yells to all and sundry
to hasten or they will be shut out and
this combination df signals Is followed
by a jostling stream of people from
both directions. t-t
Presently the rush Blackens until
only a solitary pedestrian or possibly
a man on a donkey, full tilt, a belated
ricksha or a heavily laden cart strag
gles through. Then a movement Is
made with the gates, yelling bursts out
afreBh and another rush ensues, the
gates being meanwhile half closed and
occasionally opened a little way again
until, the. outgoers having meanwhile
ceased, there Is a final scrimmage to
get Into the city, and'the process of
closing, which has taken some half
hour In all, Is concluded. !•
. Then, the huge Iron-plated doors
having clanged to„a monster Iron pole
Is dragged up and placed across them
on Iron supports, being retained In
position by a padlock of enormous pro
portions, and of the well-known Chi
nese type.. There are In all In the city
of Pekin, some nineteen gates and the
same ceremony Is obserevd at each,
but at such a thoroughfare as the Hat-
amen there Is naturally more traffic
and the process Is probably propor
tionately longer.

Imbedded or scattered through the feld

gether or fur apart, and Is blasted from
(he rocks by means of dynamite, the
purer veins belug found between walls
of slate. From the uiineB It is taken to
the shups, where It Is split Into thin
sheets, trimmed Into regular forms and

varying with tho size and color of the
sheets. The average also Is about

Inches are sometimes found.
Napoleon's Bad Handwriting,
M. Hotissaye attributes the muddle
over orders at Waterloo to Napoleon’s
execrable handwriting. This was the
opinion of the writing master of Alex-
uudre Dumas: “The emperor never lost
a battle except by bis bad writing. His
officers could never make out what he
meant. Remember this, Alexandre,
uud make your down strokes heavy
and your up strokes light.” Grouchy
declares that during the battle of Wa
terloo he could not make out whether
Napoleon wrote ”bata|Ue gngneo" or
"butaille engugee," and be eonjectural-
ly read "battle gained.”—Andrew Lang
lu Loudon Post.
Tke Freaki of Fate,
Here Is a unique. memorial notice
from a Georgia exchange:
"Once he was nearly swallowed by
an earthquake and shortly afterward
was blown nearly a quarter of a mile
by a hurricane, but he triumphed over
all these afflictions, only'to be kicked
out of life by a mule that bad a mort
gage on It and was blind In one eye."—
