It takes very little cotton to cause

NEW ORLEAN8 COTTON LETTER
By wire to Clark & Co.
New Orleans, April 4. — Liverpool
news, as a general rule, was favorable
and seemed to express little sympathy
with the operations on the short side.
Trade conditions were reported excel
lent in Manchester, and spot sales in
Liverpool showed a material Increase
over yesterday’s business, 14,'000 bales
at a loss of 1 point.
Options were quiet, closing 1 point
under the previous day’s' level. The
strength of the local market on the
opening and shortly thereafter was
due to the support of the former bull
lenders, which made shorts visibly
nervous, and a further Improvement
was noted by their covering. Weath
er conditions recently can hardly be
called Ideal and the prospects for more
rain throughout the belt are almost
sure to be realized, which caused In
the later session a marked Improve
ment In the market’s undertone, but
as heretofore, was along narrow lines,
with speculation chiefly confined to
ringside traders.
The statistical position has been
considerably strengthened by the pub
lication of. the seml-weeltly figures,
showing a decline In receipts as com
pared with the corresponding halt
week last year of 39,000 bales, and a
much higher ratio of shipments to re
ceipts than In the Immediate preced
ing seasons. This data foreshadows
another favorable weekend visible
statement, but whether this will have
been discounted or not ere the time
arrives, remains to be seen.
The situation, nevertheless, scarce
ly udmits of any wide divergence from
present level® as long as the market
lacks the Interest of tile public at
large. GIBERT & CLAY.'
If England continues to take cot
ton at the present rate, we can safely
expect a higher range of values.
The best thing In the market Just
now for the outsider Is to .play the
fall months on weather conditions and
allow, the Bull Bears and Bear Bulls
to churn the summer months up and
down on themselves.
The rapid decrease In the visible
supply Is being noted, and if same
continues at present rate we shall be
1,500,000 less than last year by the
time the new crop begins to move.
These figures must prove very bullish
on new crop positions.
Of the 14,000 bales sold. In Liverpool
today, 13,000 were American cotton.
Egyptians and “the short stuff that
grows In India” do not appear to be
much In demand.
Port receipts were 17,000 against
36,000 last year.
“Of all the campaigns in which I
have been interested, it is this one I
feel most secure ' In.”—Theodore H.
Price.
’TIs well for the hears that we have
little speculation theBe days. Any
buying Interest from the public would
soon 'cause a singeing of bear hide”
that could be smelled around the
world.
Liverpool closed quiet, 1 lower for
the day.
