Collectors of antiques have to be ah the time on their guard against fraud Even, then they are often deceived. Artists exist who can Impose on the very, elect. A well known collector had a precious box of rare enamel. He sent it to Vienna to be repaired, nnd the In genious mender fitted It with a new lid. Then he put a new lower part to the original lid, and two collectors were made happy. A gem cutter took a modern gold Greek ring, recut the stone with an Intaglio of an Important subject, made a turkey swallow the ring nud after eome time killed the 'turkey. The resi dence In the bird’s crop had endowed the gem with air the marks of age. A scholar In a little known part of Dalmatia was seeking gold coins nnd ornaments,of the old Servian dynasty. A dealer .came to him with a beautiful ly wrought crucifix, which be claimed to be, a genuine antique. In examining the article with a glass tbe student came across a tiny Inscription, and, better versed than tbe dealer gave him credit for being, be read It aloud, ‘‘Tbls cross was made In 1893 by —giving the name of the maker it said. The dealer stood not on the order of his go ing, but left at once. Many a reputed article Is Its own un doing. At one time a number of lead coins were pat on tbe market as an tiques. It was discovered that the Arabic numerals with which they were dated were of the tashlon not Invented at the supposed time of their making. Collectors, young arid old, trained and untrained, are constantly being taken In. Even museums themselves are not free from fakes. ■ * ' PUMICE STONE. The Beat Quality Cornea-From the la* land of Llparl. We often hear It remarked, and par ticularly after the eruption of a volqa- no, that pumice stone ought to be plen tiful -.ad cheap, as quantities must have been ejected during the volcanic disturbance; As g, matter of fact, how ever, nono of the white stfette In gen eral use la obtained from active volca noes. It comes from the deposits of .the article discovered In one or two quar ters of the globe, the best of which •a at present to be found In tbe Island of Llparl, situated In the Tyrrhenian sea. Tbe island is mountainous in character and consists of tiiffs and lavas and of highly siliceous volcanic products. The district where the stone Is fonnd is called Campo Blanco or Monte Potato. i,Bw feet above the level of the sea. After riding a considerable distance, partly along precipitous paths suffi ciently dangerous to be Interesting and partly -through vineyards and over grassy plains, one almost comes sud denly upon a seemingly snow clad val ley,* inclosed by bills also.qplte White, and the whale glaringly bright on a sunny day. Into those hills workmen arc unceasingly digging deep burrows, working within by candlelight. In their excavations they come across many lumps of pumice stone, which are plac ed In baskets, subsequently being con veyed along the valley to tbe seashore, where small boats are loaded and sail to the seaport near by, where tbe atone Is sorted, packed and shipped to dis tant parts cither by way of Messina or Leghorn. i 1 Adirondack. The word “Adirondack” comes to us from tbe language of the Mohawks. With them It was Ha-de-ron-dack and mehnt wood eaters. This term was npplled In derision to a few members of ji once powerful branch of, the Al- gonqulns, who were defeated by the Iroquois and forced to seek refuge in a fastness of tbe mountains. They were In grent distress, and It Is said they Bent messengers to their victors asking them to make no farther war upon them, as they Vere reduced to the ne cessity of eating roots and the bark of trees. A few of them finally escaped to the north, nnd otliers were captured and held In slavery by the Mohawks. The Giant ,611 Lobster*. Tbe largest lobster ever caught on the coast of Amejica was taken by ■ Belfast (Me.) flshehnan In 1881. It weighed . twenty-three pounds and measured thirty-seven Inches from the end of Its Hall to the tip Of the long front claws, Tbe monater was too large to enter a common lobster trap, but as the trap was belpg drawn np’lt was caught In the, netting and safely landed, K Many...years; agy a lobster ■■I If You Will Not , Buy New Furniture Get a Bottle of : l j Importance to be given a placo lii'wffc Hibson’s ’(HlMory'of Belfast” b ••;-**' M- Or a Can of : : : ' Brunswick-Balk Collender Polish • ! * and polish up the old furniture.
