The drunken man is a nuisance al most anywhere, but he is possibly at his worst on a train, where you are forced to remain close to him. The Albany Herald of yesterday contained tin Interesting discussion of this nuisance. Judge H. C. Sheffield, of Arlington, wrote a letter to The Herald asking If there was not some way In Which the saloons of Albany could be closed during Military Day at the Chautauqua. It was pointed out that the outgoing trains on Military Day are crowded with drunken men, and they are a menace to the women and children on the cars—and all so ber men ns well. He mentioned the fact that last year there was consid erable shooting on the trains going by Arlington, and he was really afraid this year to risk his sons off on this trip, he being physically unable to ac company them. . All those who have been to Albany from this section on these public days know how truthful afid conservative this statement of Judge Sheffield's Is. There would many more people go from this point—people of a certain class—if it was known that the sa loons would close. If they knew there would be no danger on- the return trip. The Herald makes answer to the card, stating among other things that the power of closing the saloons does not rest In the Chautauqua. It de plores this drunkenness and rowdy ism on trains and suggests that thpre is a remedy in the law. It Is now a violation of the . law of the state to be drunk in a public place, and especially on a train or street-oar. The Herald thinks that the sheriffs, deputies and police might go through the trains at various stations and take charge of the drunken ones. It is also suggested that the authorities at Albany could nab the drunk man at the depot and prevent his appearing among ladies on the outgoing trains. Here is the milk of the cocoanut. If the sheriff of Dougherty county and his deputies will keep an eye on the depot and departing trains and arrest all the red-eyed monsters who are loaded with booze and pistols, 1 they will save a multitude of trouble and uneasiness, if Indeed lives are not saved.
