“In the United States we have the
lowest rate, the highest wages, and
the best railroad service In the worl'd.
During the last thirty years rates have
been reduced from 2 cents per ton per
mile to about 714 mills per ton per
mile. On some rallronds last year the
average rate per ton per mile was as
low as 6 mills and a fraction per ton
per mile. How much further this re
duction In the aggregate can go' Is
difficult to tell—possibly If the grades

“When
made its report—and that Is within
the memory of many senators—the 1
great question was whether thh rate
could ever get lower than 1 cent a ton I
a mile. Now we have about 6 mills ai
ton a mile on the average and lower]
still on some railroads. It has been
pushed down io that point, hut I do
not know how much further It can go;
I do not think beyond 5 mills per ton
per mile. Already we are so near the
dividing line that the reduction of a.
mill or two per ton per mtle may mark j
the difference between profit or Iosb.
It Is remarkable what an enrmous
saving there has been to the people in
thirty years in the voluntary reduction 1
of rates by the railroads. Take, for
instance, the case of the Great North
ern railroad. A statement prepared by
Mr. Jas. ,1. Hill, president of the road,
shows that on this single road In thir
ty years the reduction has been over
{679,000,000. What a saving to the
people. |
