Nearly Forty Years That Have Sold W« can supply your want*,for all SHE IS NINETY-TWO THIS WEEK OF HER FORTUNE. ROMANCE London, April 23.—The Baroness Burdott-Coutts, distinguished as pos sessing more wealth than any other private woman In the world, will be 92 years old the coming week. The venerable - peeress has been quite .111 this winter and her recovery has been bo slow as to alarm her family and friends. Despite her age and inflrml. ties she continues to tjtke an active Interest In business affairs and also In the countless charities and philanthro pies which have made her name fa mous throughout the United Kingdom. The baronesB Is particularly loved by the Whitechapel costermongers in the Bast End, and has done much to Im prove the care of the clever, quick donkeys which the hawkers drive through the most crowded streets of London at a quick pace. How her colossal fortune came to Lady Burdett Coutts, and why It should have come to her Instead of to her elder sister, Is an old Btory, but none the less Interesting. Her father was Sir Francis Burdett, a well-known member of parliament for the borough of Westminster, and the laBt person to be imprisoned In the Tower of Lon don for political views. Sir Francis Carried Sophia, a daughter of Thomas Coutts, the London banker, who was therefore the grandfather of both Lady Burdett CouttB and Mrs., Money Coutts. Old' Tom Coutts, whose own mother had been a ‘scullery maid of the name of Eliza beth Starkey, after losing his first wife, the mother of Sophia Coutts, contracted a second marriage with Miss Marrlet Mellon, a well-known ac tress, to whom on dying he bequeathed hts entire fortune, making no provision for hts daughter, or for his grandchil dren. Some time after his. demise the wid owed Mrs. Coutts, the ex-actress, mar ried the Duke of St Albans. She seems, however, to have resented the manner In which she was treated by the family of her second husband. At her death It was found that she had left every penny of her colossal for tune to Angela Burdett, her step- granddaughter, then a girl of 23, who had become a great favorite of hers. The DucheBB bequeathed this fortune to Angela Burdett on the understand ing that she should assume the name of Coutts lq addition to her own, and that In the event of her death without issue It should go to one of her older sisters, Clara Burdett. It Is by virtue of this will that the bulk of the for tune of Lady Burdett-Coutts will at her death go, not to her American-born husband, but to her nephew, Francis Burdett Money Coutts, a man now about 55 years old. AT THE UNION DEPOT, Bird* of Passage Who Heeded Not the Solicitations of Albany Jehus. Savannah, Ga, It was a tired looking family that stepped from the train. A stoop- shouldered father led the way. He carried an Infant whose face was al ternately dust and tear streaks. Then followed three or four children, seem ingly of one age and size. A dispirited looking mother, encumbered with three children, a lunch-basket, two valises and various other parapher nalia, brought up the rear. The Jehus espied them. Cries of "Haok!” rent the air. But they were of no use. . Finally one of them, more enterpris ing than the rest, a Napoleon of trans portation, as It were, shouted; “This way, Cap. r got a four-seated hackl” The others subsided at this, or rath er collapsed. It was too much, even for them. But the enemy of race suicide passed on with his charges to the waiting room, and from there boarded the train for Moultrie. should j?e named FOR SALE! 1st.
