Some years ago a Spaniard named
Martinos gave one of ttye most extraor
dinary exhibitions on record. It was
at the New Tivoli, In Paris, In the
presence of an audience of scientific
men, who placed Its genuineness be
yond doubt. A large oven had been
heated by a furnace for scveril hours.
This the, Spuntard entered, clothed In
flannel trousers and shirt, a large clouU
of the same material and a felt som
brero. He sang a song while a fowl
was roasted by bis side and at tbe end
of fifteen minutes came out again, tbe
temperature registered being between
202 degrees and 812 degrees 1'’., or
about 100 degrees above tbe tempera
ture of boiling water. He entered the
oven a second time and ate ihe fowl
which had been roasted beside him.
After a short pause he was shut In,
lying on a board surrounded by can
dles. After awhile the audience raised
a cry of '“Enough!” The door was
opened. The oven wae found to be
full of noxious, suffocating odor of boil
ing tallow, the sole survival of the
candles. The Spaniard came ont and
alter a hold bath was well and strong.
His pulse' when the door was first
opened beat ITU to the mluute.

Rome Itself Is spoken of as the chair

episcopal and other authority, of
course, that we get the pkrASe “ex ca

abbreviation of “cathedral church,” the

was a broad beard of a fashion an

son's time "cathedral?’ seems to have
been slang for “antique.’’’
