enclng of late, will have become a
more Important influence. The. lim
ited offerings of the more desirable
grades of spot cotton have restricted
the voluriie of business, but tpday a
decided improvement Is reported on
all sides In the inquiry for staples.
No developments of Importance
have arisen to change the aspect.
The scattered liquidation of May con
tracts in anticipation of the first no
tice days caused no wide variance in
prices, for In reality the markets have
displayed considerable absorbing
power and although slightly irregular
price changes have ensued a good
tone has been maintained withal.

New Orleans, La., April 25.
Cables reported a very healthy de
niand for spot cotton, a fact that was
of some assurance to the trade In that
It offsets In a measure the pessimistic
opinions that have lately been ruling
on account of the smaller spot sales
recently observed in that market In
crease In wages of 5 per cent In the
Lancashire district was likewise an
Item of considerable Interest
OpUons were 1 point higher on the
close over yesterday and spot sales
amounted to 12,000 bales at a-almilar
advance. Locally the market was sub
jected to considerable pressure owing
to the large amount of cotton for sale,
but the manner In which offerings
were absorbed was a matter of con
siderable speculation as to the real
source. It seems very likely, however
that tomorrow being first notice day
for May the transferring of these con
tracts Into latter months accounted
for the bulk of the trading.
Much needed showers are predicted
for the eastern belt tomorrow, Tmd
should they be realized the excellent
crop developing weather that the cot
