New Orleans, La., April 25.—The

Jones delivered the invocation. Gov.
Blanchard welcomed the veterans to
Louisiana, nnd Mayor Behrman spoke
for the city of New Orleans. The wel
coming addresses were responded to
by Lieut.-Gon. Stephen D. Lee, com-
mander-ln-chief of the United Confed
erate Votorans. Gen. Lee’s appear
ance was the occasion of a great dem
onstration. The veterans rose In a
body, hats, handkerchiefs and coats
went Into the air, and cheer after
cheer rang out, the many women pres
ent Joining In the applause. The ap
plause continued for several minutes.
In his brief address Gen. Leo made
touching reference to the late Maj.-
Qon. Joseph Wheeler and other promi
nent voterans of the Confederacy who
have passed away since the last re
union. (
Judge Jas, B. Gantt, commander of
the Missouri division of the U. C. V.,
dellyered the annual address, and then
the meeting adjourned for the day, af
ter the appointment of committees on
credentials and resolutions, which are
to report tomorrow.
Veterans and other visitors contin
ued to pour into, the city In large num
ber this morning, and it was estimated
that the total attendance at noon was
near the 100,000 mark. Texas Is un
usually well represented, while all the
states from Maryland to the mouth of
the Mississippi and from Florida to
Missouri have sent good-Blzed delega
tions. The visitors have found the lo
cal arrangements of a perfect charac
ter and nothing Is being left undone to
contribute to their comfort and pleas
ure. The entertainment features of
the program begin tonight with a
grand ball. The downtown district is
decorated as never before with a pro
fusion of flags, bunting, streamers and
electric lights.

On the Gentle Art
Of Hammocking.
Devil's Island Torture
It 1b nearly hammock time. Before

and beneath convenient trees the ham.
mock shall reign Bupreme. All Borts
and conditions of hammocks shall be
hung, from the home-made affair of
barrel staves to the high-priced
webbed article from the, stores.
It Is getting time for the young men
who have nothing to do except the
very arduous work of looking hand
some to grab a pipe, almost as large
as the youth himself, and lounge full
length, swaying gently with the
breeze. In this position he regards
the skies yrlth an expression that
though slightly vacuous, announces
him to be at peace with the world and
very much at peace with himself.
And the fair Bex, too, display an
aptitude, partly native, partly ac
quired, for hammocking cthat even in
Its normal stages is little short of
wonderful. In this case a book Is
substituted for the pipe. The book Is
unread, however. The fair one con
tents herself with watching folks pass,
occasionally sighing, occasionally gig
gling, and constantly displaying—un
intentionally, of course — a shapely
ankle, drop-stitched ericaBed. To make
the picture complete, all a peek-a-boo
waist, sleeveless, wltli lingerie effects.
Of such as these is the kingdom of
Vanity Fair.
