Mr. S. L. Slate, of Columbus, Is here

Mr. J, Sauls, who has been here
during Chautauqua week, has returned
to Atlanta.

heat was simply too much for the
folks. Those who did brave it looked
as If they had gone through an ordeal
afterwards. Perspiration and dust,
brought on by a pitiless sun, the air
unrelieved by a single breeze, are
terrors not lightly to be considered
when once experienced. Perhaps,
though the quietness of things was not
due to the weather, conditions. The
young men who usually adorn Wash
ington street on Sunday afternoon
may have been at church. There is
no harm in Indulging In this rather
delusionary opinion at any rate.
Dr. H. L. Long, of Leesburg, spent
Sunday In Albany.
Mr. A. R. Baggs was here yesterday
from Camilla.
Mr. L. A. Lindsay, of Atlanta, was
stopping In Albany yesterday.

Mr. W. O. Pearson spent Sunday at
his old home, Richland.
One of the ladles of Albany, who be
lieves It a religious duty, almost, to
attend every feature of the Clmutau-
qua, confessed last night that she was
relieved that she could stay at home.
She expressed a wish that she could
sleep for twenty-four straight hours.
Five Cars of a Freight Train
Over Edge of Trestle..
There was a bad wreck on the B. &
W. division of the Atlantic Coast Line
railway this morning near Acree.
Freight train No. 262, west bound
and due to reach Albany at 11 o'clock,
dropped five of Its cars over the edge
of a trestle. The accident was caused
by the running gear of one of the cars
going'to smash.
The trestle and traok for a consider
able distance were badly torn up, and
no train lias been able to pass the
place today, although a wrecking crew
was hurried to the scene with all pos
sible dispatch. The road should be
clear some time this evening
Conductor Calnan and Engineer Ken
drick were In charge of tho train,
Neither of them, nor any member of
the crew, was seriously injured.

Mr. R. A. Mallard, of Pelham, spent
yesterday In the city.
Mr. B. N. Williams, of Cordele, was
stopping in town yesterday.
Mr. H. R. Williams, of Raines, Fla.,
was In town yesterday.
Yesterday morning was a record-
breaker when It came to a question of
temperature. Very few people were
on the streets. Even for Sunday they
had a somewhat deserted look. Gen
erally on Sunday mornings there is
quite a crowd moving about town,
principally In the drug store regions,

Newton, Ga„ April 30. —Unofficial
returns from the various precincts of
the county Indicate that the bond elec
tion on Saturday was carried. The
figures have not been consolidated,
but it appears that bonds were given
a safe margin. In Newton 495 votes
were cast for bonds and but 2 against
bonds.
A contract for building a $25,000
courthouse will be awarded on Wed
nesday.

iron workers, building operations In
Chicago and suburbs will come to a
practical standstill Wednesday morn

Are Charges Preferred Against Atlanta
Doctors.

Atlanta, Ga., April 30.—No declara
tion by a grand jqry of Fulton county
has created more sensational Interest
than the recommendation made Satur
day that County Doctors J. W. Hurt
and E. D. Richardson be dismissed
from the county’s service for “gross
neglect of duty.” Both physicians
stand high in medical circles and have
a host of friends, who were dumb
founded at the action of the grand
jury. It Is learned that four over-
seers of the convict camps of the coun
ty gave the testimony which led to the
recommendation of dismissal. The
grand jury wants one physician em
ployed at a yearly salary of $3,000, to
take the place of the doctors whom
the body would like to see ousted from
office.
Yesterday Assistant Chief Kemp ar
rested Roscoe Lewis, colored, for wife-
beating. Roscoe was so drunk that he
Ignored not only his wife’s protests—
his blows were accompanied witu
screams that could not help Informing
the neighbors that something was
wrong In the domestic relations of the
Lewis family—but also refused to ac
knowledge the authority of the law's
representative. , He was soon reduced
to submission, though, In the usual
manner, through the agency of the
officer's club and. carried to tho city
•ockup.
