tory that his father, General Tecumseh Sherman, traveled when he came
this way with his torch-bearing soldiers. Everybody In Savannah con
demns the proposed trip. G. A. R. men and Confederate Veterans aliko
declare that it would be a very bad thing for the good father to come
over the route accompanied by a squad of cavalry, as It Is said he pro
poses to do.
Acting Mayor Dixon takes, a very decided stand against It.. Ho says
he would rather see the father hanged than for him to make such a trip.
Gen. S. F. B. Gillespie, deputy clerk of the United States court, and a
staunch member of the G. A. R„ says It would be a very bad move.
Capt. L. G. Young, commanding the Confederate Veteran's’ Association,
says It is to be regretted that the priest wishes to go over the route In
any such style.
There is much curiosity to know how that staunch Confederate,
Bishop Kelley, of the Catholic church, feels about It. He Is out of the
city.

'The 'tomb Spider.
Tte people of Italy believe In the ex
istence of a wonderful creature wblcb
for the want of a better name Is called
the tomb spider. The entomologists
know nothing of this queer beast and
declare that it only exists In the fnucy
of the superstitious persons and tbose
whose curiosity or business makes It
necessary for them to explore old ru
ins, tombs, catacombs, etc. Acdirdlng
to the popular account, the tomb spi
der Is of a put;e white color, has wings
like those of a bat, a dozen horrid
crooked legs and a body three or four
times the size of that of the largest
tropical American tarantula. The ac
counts of this queer Insect and his out
of the way places of nbode are by no
means common, and on that account
the Information concerning him which
we will be able to give Is very meager.
Any Italian will tell yon tbnt such a
creature exists, however, and that he 1)
occasionally met with In old mines and
caverns as well as In tombs and sub
terranean ruins.

Goldamlth'a Showy Clothe*.
Goldsmith was ludicrously fond of
showy clothes. ' Wheu\ he sought to
take orders In Ireland lie tried to daz-
zlo his bishop by a: pair' of scarlet
bt’eochos. While studying medicine In
Edinburgh ho' wore “rich sky-. blue
satin,’’ “fine sky blue shalloon” and
silver hat lace. Before Johnson, .Rey
nolds and Garrick be strutted about
bragging of his bloom colored coat,
and when bis reputation bad been
made by his two principal poems be
blazed forth in purple silk small clothes,
a scarlet greatcoat and a physician’s
wig. He carried a gold beaded cane,
and a sword hung by bis side, a weap
on so dlsproportloned to his diminutive
stature that a coxcomb who passed
him lu the strand called out to his
companion to “look at that fly with a
long pin stuck through It.’’—Sartorial

A Woman fa Morocco.
All the life of a woman In Morocco Is
really passed behind the walls of its
prlson-llke bouses. She sees nothing,
knows nothing. Is wholly sunk In Igno
rance. She has no social life, no after
noon “at home.” A writer says: "Most
of the ladles' calls are roof to roof vis
itations, and very nimble they are at
getting over the low partition walls,
even dragging a ladder np and down
with them If there are high ones to be
crossed. The reason Is that the roofs,
or, rather, terraces, are especially re
served for women folk, and men are
not even allowed to go up except to do
repairs, 'when the neighboring houses
are duly warned.”

If anyone has any doubt as to the
virtue "of Foley’s Kidney Cure, they
need only to refer to Mr. Alvin H.
Stlmpson, of Wllllmantlc, Conn., who,
after almost losing hope of recovery,
on account of the failure of so many
remedies, finally tried Foley’s Kidney
Cure, which he says was “Just the
thing” for him, as four bottles cured
him completely. He Is now entirely

Among the creditors of an Insolvent
firm was n New Yorker who had a bal
ance of ,$285 coming to him. This man
wanted his money. He was a good
talker and persuaded the firm to pay
him off lu case he could get the other
crcdltqrs to grant an extension of time.
So be called a meeting of the creditors
and talked to them eloquently.,about
tbo prospects of the firm getting on Its
feet- again If It only bad time. Ho
seemed to have won out wbou a little
old muu In the back of the. room rose
and In n squeaky voice declared tlmt
he, for one, wanted his money and did
not want to wait for It. "DoD’t you
think It Is rather selfish of you to Inter
fere with this plan, lu which all of tile
other creditors have agreed?” asked
the first man. "We are willing to wait
for the nmount of our claims. Every
oiie of us, Including myself, believes
tbnt this firm should have plenty of
time. How much Is your clnim, nuy-
way?” In the same piping voice the
little old mnn answered: “They owe me
$180,000. How much Is your Claim?”

Muugo Mum Lobeb, the throne, or
place of thunder, as tbo natives call It,
tbe peak of Kameruns, as the whites
call It, Is the highest point on tbe west
ern side of the African continent. The
first view the voyager gets of It who,
coming from the northward, has been
coasting for weeks along low shores
and up the stagnant rivers, fringed
with mangrove swamp, Is a thing no
man can ever forget. Suddenly, right
up out of the sea, the great mountain
rises to Its 18,760 feet, while close at
bund, to westward, towers the lovely
island mass of Fernandgfe.Po to Its
10,100 feet, and great as Is Its first
charm every time you see It It becomes
greater, although It is never the same.
Five times I have becu In tbe beautiful
bay at Its foot and have never seen'it
twice alike. Sometimes It Is wreathed
with Indigo black tornado cloads, some
times crested wltb snow, sometimes
standing out bard and clear, as though
ni&de of metal, and sometimes softly
gorgeous, wltb grccu, gold, purple nnd
pink vapors tinted by the sunset—
