SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., May 2.—Conditions of life are gradually be coming normal here, and the work of clearing the wreckage in preparation for rebuilding the city Is progressing rapidly. Retail tradesmen of every description are resuming business. Commission firms along the water front are doing a thriving business. All garbage will be cleared away, within two weeks, and a furnace for Incinerating refuse will be working soon. Street cars are given permission to run till m|dnlght, and restric tions on lighting houses are removed, excepting that oil is not allowed to be used at present. Every chimney in the city will be .Inspected before allowed to be used. Many of the larger factories that were unharmed are starting up with full forces. Mr. Berry Hall has accepted a posi tion with the Albany fire department Mr. Hall began work yesterday, the 1st. Mr. L. R. Robey, of Dohtan, Ala., is in town for a few days. The Jewish young people of the city gave an enjoyable dance at the Elks Hall last night, complimentary to their visitors in the city. There were about fifteen couples. The'affair was thor oughly enjoyed by all. "" Map! Ished his document he turned Hewitt over to a deputy sheriff to be tried for lunacy. The paper he had been work ing on was a commitment for the un fortunate man who (bought his wife was insane'. Hewitt will be tried In ten days. Death of Thomas E. Mitchell. The body of Mr. Thomas E. Mitchell, who died here yesterday, was shipped to Augusta last night for Interment. The funeral will take place there this afternoon. Mr. Mitchell was formerly working at Hofmayer, Jones & Co.’s, has accepted a position with D. C. Betjeman. Mr. I. Jacobson went to Cordele to day to meet the Savannah delegation of the T. P. A. Mr. D. A. Brown, of Edison, wds in town yesterday. Mr. Henry S. Walker, a popular young traveling njan. Is here today. Mr. Gus Newsome went to Amerlcus today. Mr. Ellis Lockhart, who has been representing the Georgian here the last few days, returned to Atlanta yes terday. Mr. Warren Story, of Leslie, Is in town today. Mr. G. S. Jackson went to Smith- ville today. The family and g, few friends of Mr. J. H. Davis are enjoying a family pic nic at Blue Springs today. Messrs. A. C. Cox and Roy Barnes went to Amerlcus on business today. Judge Eugene Ray, of Columbus, passed through the,city yesterday en route to Cairo, where he delivers this evening his lecture, “Sentiment and Sense.” , Mr. Clifford Grubbs, of Sylvester, was In town today. Savanah, May 2.—That Savannah Is a great military town was shown again last night by the great Interest taken In the Savannah Volunteer Guards’ squad drill at the Guards' Armony. The drill was to commemorate the 104 th anniversary of the Guards. When the time came for beginning the drill there was a large crowd present. The judges of the contest were Col. G. Arthur Gordon, of the First Regi ment of Infantry, Maj. D. C. Barrow, and Maj. M. J. Oleary, also of that command. Squad D was the first one drilled. Sergeant W. H. .Robertson was In charge of it. Squad A came next, under command of Sergeant T. E. Moore, Squad B was third, with Sergeant R. G. Tunno commanding, and Squad C was 4th, with Sergeant H. S. Dreese, Jr., In command. Major J. Ferris Cann presented the prize, which was a purse of gold. Squad D won the prize. Committed fcr Lunacy. Mr. Macon W. Hewitt went to the Court of Ordinary yesterday and asked that a writ of lunafcy be taken out against his wife. Hg said his wife was crazy, and" that, being proficient in the black art,, she let her spirit enter hlB breast every night, and this caused trouble. He was debating with the clerk of the Court of Ordinary whether it would be best to have his wife ar rested for lunacy or Just crack her neck.
