Washington, May 7.—In his speech on the railroad rate question Senator Morgan, of Alabama, said: ‘This senate will rue the day when It abolishes trial by jury in the adju dication of the reasonableness of rates of transportation by common carriers, which everybody admits are unlawful if they are not reasonable. “The railroad magnates who abuse the corporate powers granted-them by the people of the states, In imposing burdens upon them that are too griev ous to be borne, could not ask a safer retreat from the demands of justice or one that Is more coveted by them, than this menstire furnishes them In dis carding and abolishing all right of the people to bring them to Justice before honest juries. “Reserve to the people the full right of jury trials and they will not for long, suffer injustice from those who have seized upon their railroads and their charter powers and are using them for their wrong and oppression. “The power to review, control, or controvert proceedings by mandamus or by injunction, so thoroughly dis cussed” in this debate, is not given by this bill to state courts, whose powers are so burled under this avalanche of legal lore urged In favor of It that no regard Is paid to them. The National Health and Accident Association of Georgia has been in business only a few months, but has been remarkably successful. Atlanta, Ga„ May J.—Living at the rate of about $100 a month on a week ly salary of $10 was what got W. 3. Rogers, aged 26, a clerk for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, on Whitehall street, who has been ar rested on a charge of “knocking down” change. In a cell at police barracks the young man admitted his guilt Rogers’ employers noticed that he seemed better dressed than the other clerks, some of whom were making considerably more than the young man, and their suspicions were aroused. Marked coins and aid fur nished by fake customers formed the trap Into which Rogers fell.unsuspect ingly, and was at once turned over to the tender mercies of the law. Crawford was de stroyed by fire early Saturday morn ing. Little was saved, Mr. Crawford being at home alone. He narrowly escaped with his life. The loss is par tially covered by insurance.
