Almost a Serious Accident at
the Union Passener De
pot — Passenger Coach
Struck by Engine.
DO YOU REALIZE |
the Serious Consequences
of continued eye Strain?
Priceless beyond all pos
sessions is the eyesight,
deserving of youh highest
consideration. Don’t trifle
with your eyes. It will
cost you nothing to see us.
Yesterday morning a l'ather bad
wreck occurred in the yards at the
Union depot. That it was not worse
is almost wonderful.
While Central of Georgia passenger
train No. 8, in charge of Conductor
Taylor and - Engineer Little, was stand
ing directly in front of the station,
yard engine 79, with Engineer Lati
mer,; crashed into the rear coach from
an ndjoining track. It was only a
short while until the train was due to
leave for Mitcon, and there were sev
eral passengers in the coach. Nobody
was hurt, however. The car was
smashed up and the headlight and
pilot of the engine were broken and
its front was generally knocked up.
Both engine and car were sent to the
company shops at Macon this morn
ing.
Saturday night* 1 at about 11:30
o’clock Dora Edney and Lee English
had a little difficulty at the corner of
State and Monroe streets. The bone
of contention was a banjo. Dora and
a couple of her friends of the mascu
line gender were indulging in a little
musical culture. English, on the out
side, listened to the sentimental
strains of "Boil Dem Cabbage Down,"
as they floated through the window,
rendered by Ed. Lewis, one of the for
tunate ones with Dora.
“Who dat pickin’ on dat box?" he
inquired a little loudly.
For answer Dora advanced to the
window and consigned hint to hotter
regions in language garnished by ex
pletives that usually are the accom
paniments of such commands. Eng
lish's sensitive soul was stung by this,
and he came through the front door,
sans ceremony. Simultaneously Lew
is remembered that he had an engage,
ment elsewhere and departed through
a rear window, without troubling the
rest with a farewell address. The
chief actors now were Dora and Eng
lish, and the scene became one of con
fusion, in which a razor and a broom
handle played prominent parts.
The other occupant of the room,
Frank Johnson, who, like all the rest,
was colored, gazed at the affair from
a far corner of the room. Suddenly
remembering one of the Beatitudes—
a recollection of his church-going days
—he essayed to enact the role of
peacemaker. His efforts, though praise
worthy, were unappreciated, and he
came in for a goodly share of stray
licks.
English was slashed a little on the
Shoulder and Dora received a few licks'
from the broom handle, but beyond
that the damage was slight.
