Atlanta Constitution Hpaolal. Washington, May 7. —Miss Lucille Patterson and her pretty niece, Miss Edna Kirk, both of Lewlstown, Pa., are charged with fraudulent use of the malls. By means of a matrimonial paper, the government secret service agents say, these women collected sums of money from men all over the United States who wanted wives. In the very peaceful community of ABhburn, Ga., the Rev. J. B. Dozier read that Mrs. Patterson was seeking a loving husband, and he forthwith wrote her. Several letters were exchanged, the clergyman proposed and was accepted, The bride-to-be wrote asking for car fare from Lewlstown to Georgia. The pastor sent $30, but the bride was not forthcoming. The Rev. Mr. Dozier grew nervous and when hts letters remained unan swered he appealed to the postal au thorities at Washington. Other men who had sent money and received no bride ns per agreement also wanted explanations. A large number of other victims to the tune of from $20 to $35 each, have complained to the postal authorities of Mrs. Patterson’s matrimonial ne gotiations. Miss Kirk Is alleged to be an accomplice. II DEAL It Comes From Cordele and Is Here Published for • What It Is Worth. Yesterday afternoon's Cordele News brings the following rumor of a rail road deal, or rather, of two railroad deals; “It has been currently reported on the streets of this place, and among the local rallriad men, that the Al bany, Florida & Northern railroad has been purchased by the Georgia South ern & Florida railroad. It Is known that a few days since Vice-President • and General Manager Parrott and General Superintendent Grady, of thu G. S. & F., came to Cor dele and were met here by Manager Crews, and together In a special they took a trip over the line from Cordele to Albany. It has been surmised that the Sea Board Air Line would want this prop, erty, and on one or two occasions ru mor had It that they had bqught It. It will mean much for Cordele If the, G. S. & F. has taken over this short lino as it will be at once brought up to a high standard In every respect, and operated • probably in connection with other lines southwest of Cordele and Albany. Regarding any changes In the management of the property nothing could be learned. The same report has It that they have also purchased the Georgia Northern line running from Albany to Pldcock, and the two will be oper ated In connection with the main sys tem of the G. S. & F.” A NEGRO PEI OF I Got Into Row in Savannah and Was Killed by An other Negro — What Let ters Disclosed. Orlno Laxative Fruit Syrup Is best for women and children. There has been a great deal of rain during the last few days, and the grass Is already getting busy. Should the wet weather continue a few days longer, the farmers will have a great big job on their hands, and we will hear a great deal more about the scarcity of labor. Savannah, Ga., May 8.—Moses Wil liams, the negro boy who was killed here yesterday In a fight with another negro boy, had some remarkable let ters In his possession that showed him to have been the especial pet of a Boston cult who seemed to have made It their business to see that he got an education. Williams was a student at Booker T. Washington's TuBkOgee school last year. He had In his triink a letter written him by Charles Alex ander, of Boston, In which Alexander, who writes on the letterhead of the Boston Colored Citizen, Instructed him how to write a letter of thanks for the many kindnesses shown him by his Boston friends. Certain Boston youpg 'ladles had promised to write Wllllame onee a mhnth and his benefactor told him to be sure to keep up the correspond ence. Williams was getting ready to re turn to Boston by steamer when he got into an altercation with a young negro named_ Jenkins and was stabbed to death. His Tu3kegee education did not prevent- him from engaging In a brawl.
