New Orleans, La., May 14,1900. There wore no cables from Liver pool to throw any light upon the strength what options displayed In the later session of that market Opening prices were about as expected, viz., 4 down, but on the close the loss of only 1 point was recorded, while the spot, situation showed a decided im provement In sales, amounting to 14,- 000 hales, the old quotations being re duced 4 points. A considerable Improvement In the undertone has been observed today, and prices have been well maintained, although numerous advices from New York have been to the effect that bull Interests were largely supporting the summer months. On the other hand, the significant sales in Liverpool to day have doubtless caused the bat tered condition existing, and hence it in reasonable to assume that the va rious markets’ Improvements, for the time being at least, have not been en tirely artificial, and in reality have a basis of morlt. No Improvement In. the spot situa tion has occurred of late, to Infuse en thusiasm Into the ranks of those fa vorable to higher prices, while on the other hand, tho character of the weather gains In Importance, but as yet not proportionately so much in Its Influence upon price changes. Yours truly, GIBERT & CLAY. COTTON PICKINGS. Furnished for Daily Herald Readers by Clark & Co. British spot bulls bought everything offered in the old town this morning. Sales were 14,000 bales at 615d. Liverpol futures were 3 points eas ier, but continued heavy sales of spots amply atoned for all shortcomings in the contract market. 1 New York and the market at the Gulf metropolis opened "steady” at an advance of 2 points. Price’s gang of "sharpshooters” were active bidders for the summer and winter positions. Port receipts were only 10,000, against 26,000 last year. New York’s "band of brigands,” who are t^ver AGAINST the market, ap pear to be "singing in a very low key” just now. If 12,000,000 will bring 10 cents in the South, how much will 11,500,000 bring? It is too early to sell the winter montliB. Walt. Liverpool was quite steady all day. The closing was at a net decline of 1 point. Yesterday morning Officer Walden arrested two contract-jumpers, wanted in Worth county. He was apprised of their presence here by a telephone message. They are both negroes, and gave their names as Jesse Crawford and Will Stewart. They will be sent back to Worth county. Last 8treet Tax Notice.
