SiS LITTLE KNOWN OF EARTH QUAKES. After all the Inquiry, Investigation, speculation and attempted explanation that have followed the great calamity at San Francisco, kbout the only thing that has been certainly develhped Is the fnet that the world knows very lit tle about earthquakes. Seismology Is evidently In Its In fancy when there Is so much Inquiry and demand tor Information, while no body responds with an explanation of the disturbances, ' Absolutely nothing has been forthcoming from the scien tists In the way ot fundamental facts as to the cause ot earthquakes. We are told by as good an authority i the Philadelphia Ledger that the careful and systematic observation of earthquakes has been going on not more than twenty-five years, and that there are complete records for only about halt that period. The News respects the able young attorney who evidently felt that he was doing a work, that would result beneficently, when he had published the letter nnd request, under review.
