SMITH. • The regular monthly meeting of the Albany Business League last night was not largely attended, but a number of important matters were considered. President Morris Weslosky was in the chair. After the transaction of routine bus iness, Secretary Betjeman reported that gratifying progress had been made in the matter of procuring for Albany additional manufacturing en- During the last few weeks ALBANY Phil Hariris F. 0. Tucker, iterprlses. several parties representing important interests have visited the city and in vestigated conditions with reference to the availability of this locality for manufactories. As the result of these Investigations, there appears to be lit tle doubt that In the course of the next four months a decided impetus will be given local manufacturing in terests, and definite announcement will shortly be made as to the exact nature of what may be expected. Mr. A. W. Muse called attention to a petition which has been circulated in the city during the last few days, and . rwhich business men generally have signed, requesting the railroads enter- ling Albany to close their freight of fices on Saturdays at the noon hour. iThe petition has been circulated by representatives of the railroads. - Mr, Muse called attention to the tfact that if this arrangement should , be carried out the trade of Albany .'would suffer. A party from out of town coming in on one of the morn ing trains of Saturday and purchasing 'p bill of goods from either a wholesale or retail house, could not, under the arrangement proposed, have his pur chase shipped out by freight until Tuesday morning, or three days later than under the present arrangement. Mr. Muse • insisted that the reasons why such' an arrangement would in- I jure the trade of Albany were obvious, and the business men present ap- i ipeared to fully agree with him. . [ A resolution was adopted instructing the secretary to file with the different railroads a protest against changing the present arrangement, for the rea sons outlined above. The members present indulged in a lengthy and interesting discussion of the urgent, need of devising ways and means of providing additional stores and dwellings for Albany. There are pcores of families turned away from Albany every month because of the present conditions, and it Is recognized that there can be no further very de cided Increase in the city's population until provision is made for the ac commodation of newcomers. Nothing of a definite nature was accomplished by the discussion last night, but it is hoped that the full realization of ex isting conditions will be followed by some concerted action that will bear fruit. - *• Leading Optician.
