Madrid, May 17.—Today was the 20th birthday ot King Alfonso and the anniversary was celebrated In the cus tomary manner In Madrid and through out the kingdom. A lew weeks hence the youthful monarch Is to wed Prin cess Ena of Battenberg, on which oc casion the festivities will be' on a scale of great magnificence. In view of the near approach of thlB event to- 1 day’s celebration was of a milder char acter than It otherwise would have been. At present all Madrid Is busily engaged la preparing for the popular festivities that will attend the royal wedding. Unless some untoward event occurs, King Alfonso’s wedding day will go down In history as one of the most brilliant, gorgeous, splendid and hos pitable In the annals of pageant-loving Spain. Already every effort on the part of those responsible for the cere monial management of the court are hard at work preparing for t|ie great week. In view of the nation's history during the past decade there Is a special lhcentlve to make the event as grand and spectacular os possible In order to show by example that the an cient splendor of Spain Is not yet to be numbered among the things Of the past. The festivities will be on a grand scale.
