Editor Herald: In your paper of the 16th I see that the city fathers have (at the request of most of the property owners on Broad street) decided to pave the sidewalks as far as Madison. I suppose those who favor this Ure all well'oft and able to meet the billii; or. on the other hand, do not own a foot on Broad street. In either case, the way Is clear to the members of council. But what about the poor property, owner who finds himself at this time so unfortu nate as to be burdened with, say, three-quarters or one acre of Albany dirt, and Is one of the few who find It hard work to live at all? With an ex tra tax for schools and that sidewalk bill In view, the future looks dark to the poor property owner who, without being consulted (rather Ignored), has We are n>: vsry apt to have a mo squitoless summer, so why not let us put one of our .cme N ets on your bed? LOWRY COTTON PICKER, Article in Scientific Ameri can Tells of Success of Ma chine Which Was Given Its First Trial at Albany Two Years Ago. To The Herald: Since the Lowry cotton picker made Its first appearance here, about two years ago, but little has been heard In this section relating to Its improye- ment or success. As the people of this county feel a special Interest In It, not only from Its promise to solve the la bor question In the cotton field, but also because the machine was practi cally .built In Albany, and had Its first trials near here, the following extracts from a lengthy d aserlptlve and Illus trated article by William Dale In the Scientific American of date of May 6, will be of general Interest. The gen eral appearance of the machine Is much like it was when here, but metal tubes have been added to convey the bolls from the "doffer” whqel to the bags, and there are other Improve ments. r , , . . , , Most of our people are familiar with If the city s affairs are to be run in <„ 0 .„i„ oil- | the general construction and principle of operation of the machine, so I only quote those portions of the article which refer to Improvements, and td economy of operation over hand labor.
