NEW ORLEANS COTTON LETTER.
By wire to Clark A Co.
New Orleans, La., .May 17, 1906.
In Liverpool the market broadened
out considerably, and an excellent un
dertone was brought about by the con
tinued demand for cotton on the part
of spinners, and the large sales. The
short interest In the old crop months
was reported to have covered freely,
bnt part of the advance was later lost
on the undoing of July straddles. In
the net result options gained 3 points
over the previous day’s close and spot
Bales 15,000 bales at increase of 6
points.
Locally both futures and the spot
situation continue In a comatose state.
Every now and again an attempt is
made to shake off the prevailing leth
argy, but all such efforts fall of a final
rosult, lacking as they do Bpontanlety
and support of a general character,
nevertheless nothing has transpired to
either shake the confidence of the
bulls, or to Inspire those advocating
lower prices to any concerted-or ag
gressive action.
Considerable doubt exists as to the
exact status of the variously reported
May deal that for the moment seems
to be the paramount issue In the east
ern market. From all that can be
learned, It seems that a final liquida
tion of the stock now held by the long
Interests will be consummated through
the medium of contracts, but in the
meantime the contending sides are ex
erting their utmost, the bears to de
press the market and the bulls to ad
vance prices to a higher level.
Yours truly,
GIBERT & CLAY.
