The only Interesting feature of the foreign market was the magnitude of spot sales, which in all probability caused some further short covering In the summer months and the conse quent Improvement reported on the opening of options, although cnbles were lacking to throw any light on the situation. Spot sales were 16.000 bales, 1 point down, while options were b'nroly steady on the close and lower by 2 points than yesterday’s final close. The opening of the local market was featureless In the extreme, but prices on the call were stendy on the contin ued excellence of business done In Liv erpool, bears ostensibly by a little har monious action, brought about a de cline, but In reality the shrinkage In values could more reasonably be at tributed to the fact that the prevailing apathetic condition of the spot market was at InBt beginning to assert itself. Speculation Is the friend the staple needs most just now. Latham. Alexander & Co. estimate the acreage at 28,000,000. The Bell will soon begin to toll for shorts in summer positions. Sir Camnbell-Bannermnnn was able to give Manchester oninners little comfort in their request for the gov ernment to open up cotton-growing territory. Port receipts were 19,000, against 25,000 last year. Again the weather was favorable on the growing crop. OCEAN ROPES. !A Marine Plant That Growa a Stem Three Hundred Feet Lone. The largest marine plant and proba bly one of the highest plants known on this globe is a gigantic seaweed, the nereocystls, the stem of which has been found to grow as much as 300 feet long. It was first discovered not far from the Alaskan coast, but has since been found floating in various parts of the Pacific ocean along the American and Asiatic shores. This seaweed grows in a very curious man ner. Large quantities of it are found fit a little distance from shore and at depths not exceeding 300 feet. On loamy bottoms large thickets of this plant take root, and a stem of the thickness of ordinary cord grows up ward. At Its top there is a pear shaped balloon, which grows with the stem, nnd when It reaches the surface of the water It often measures six feet and more In length, with a diameter of four feet six Inches. This balloon has, of course, an upward tendency and keeps the stem growing until It floats on the surface of the water. From the top of this balloon a large tuft of strong, thick, spadcllke leaves grow out, which originally are not more than two feet long and which grow nnd split until from the bnlloou a roselike growth of from fifty to sixty-five feet in diame- ,ter covers the water. This gigantic weed grows in such quantities that near the shore largo meadowlike is lands are formed, which impede navi gation. The natives of the Aleutian Islands make manifold usage of this plant. From their strong dried stems they make ropes 250 feet and more long, while balloons of this weed fur nish them with large vessels after they are dried, the smaller ones being used In their boats to ball out water. The long leaves, after beiug dried, are cut Into narrow strips and used for wicker work, the making of baskets and simi lar furniture. LAPP WOLF HUNTERS. A Lapp who owns a thousand deer Is a very rich man: but, ns taxes are as sessed upon the nrmber of deer, he is inclined to underestimate his herd. The most dangerous eneipy to the herd is the wolf, who, If so disposed, can kill thirty deer in a night. A band of wolves can make a rich Lapp poor. When the snow is deep and soft mid it is announced that wolf tracks have been seen in the neighborhood eL the deer the swiftest runners on fnow- shoes prepare for an exciting chase. The wolf may have a start of a mile or two, but the track it leaves in the deep, soft snow is bo prominent that the hunters can follow it at their best speed. The wolf, though he may run fast, has but slight chance of escaping the short men who on snowshoes rush through the wood, dart down steep hills and jump from ledges several yards in height Each hunter does his best to outrun the others, for the wolf belongs to the Lapp who strikes the first blow. As soon a9 the leading hunter Is close enough to the wolf he gives it a heavy blow across the loins with his strong spiked snowshoe staff. If there are other wolves to be pur sued. he kills it outright; if not, he disables it and waits till all the hunt ers arrive before giving the deatji stroke. No ice famine in Albany now.
