New Orleans, May 19.—The persist ency with which the American rings attempt, whenever the opportunity presents Itself, to force the price of cotton down seems to be growing re sponsively In favor with the foreign market, Private cables Indicate * a more general desire to sell than has hitherto been the custom, the trade holding to the belief that the market had reached the top for the time bo lug. Options lost from live to six polutB from yesterday’s close and spot sales were 7,000 baleB at a decline of seven points. The one encouraging feature that the past week developed has been the large and well maintained sales of spot cotton In Liverpool, amounting In all to 71,000 bales. If no other proof were needed to show the fallacy of constantly reiterated opinions that Bplnners have been well supplied with cotton, this fact alone would suffice, and It is all the more gratifying at a time when declining sales are nat urally looked for, as comparison with the past two years will atteBt, 66,000 bales for the corresponding week last year and 2G.OOO bales for the same period, the year before. The visible statement was bulllshly construed and had but little effect up on the market, the favorable weather offsetting the Influence that would otherwise have been felt.' In sum ming up the situation, It appears that favorable reports as to the develop ment of the new crop outweigh all other considerations and that the ex cellent position of the market In so far as the old crop Is concerned can have but little effect when the trade gen erally views present prices as suf ficiently high. The usual Saturday, dullness was apparent In the British market. Sales were only 7,000, and futures were 3 to 0 points lower. Russian spinners were reported ns heavy buyers In Liverpool during the week. Stocks In Russia really amount to nothing, and with the renewed ac tivity which follows war, the spinners must buy heavily. We took a drop of 10 points on the opening, but buying orders and profit- taking quickly steadied the market. Price must have spent the day in the country. At the present rate of consumption the visible supply will be reduced to the minimum on September 1. A crop of 12,000,000 bales minimum is a neces sity, but positive assurance of a crop of this size can not be had before December. Something New In Life Insurance.
