TrUIEiUlr.lOt AlDmSnm On Tlpplncr tne ...... New Yorkers still cling to the an cient custom of tipping their huts when greeting a male friend or acquaintance. It Is a common sight to see a staid, prosperous looking business man as be passes an acquaintance tipping bis bat, although the other Is alone and unac companied by a woman. It Is the same after a party has been together somewhere, at dinner, probably, or at the theater. You will notice that as one separates himself from the others he will say good night or au revolr and then tip his hat. Also when one man Is Introduced to another It Is dollars to a subway ticket that he will lift hta chapeau. Wonder why It Is. They don’t do It In Pittsburg.—Pittsburg Dispatch. Washington, May 21.—The clash be tween, Senators Tillman, Bailey and ex-Senator Chandler on one side, and President Roosevelt on the other, was the overshadowing sensation all Inst week. Instances have been very rare when a president of the United States has publicly denounced anyone as a liar, or when members of congress have hurled the epithet In the direc tion of the White House. President Roosevelt has hot Georgia blood In hls veins, and once during the presidential campaign and again last year he called distinguished people liars. Several years ago Grover Cleveland, between hls two terms when he waB not holding any public office, applied what Is usually regarded as the vilest epithet In the English language, to the then editor of the New York Sun. One feature of last week’s sensation which excited much comment, was the discovery of the Close friendship be tween Senator Ben Tillman, of South Carolina, and ex-Senator Chandler, of New Hampshire. The latter has not only been one of the noisiest wavers of the bloody shirt, and opposed to sep arate cars for the races, but In the railroad rate bill tight the interests which he represents are directly op posed to the Interests of Senator Ben TJllmnn’s constituents. Chandler is said to own largo cotton mills In New England, fie wants the Interstate Commerce Commission to have power to make rates, Commis sioner Prouty has already Intimated that If he gets the power he will see that New England cotton mills are given lower rates to the west and thus give them an advantage over South ern mills In shipping to market. At present, the rate on cotton goods from Atlanta to Chicago, and from New England to Chicago are the same. However, the rates from New England to Chicago are 18 per cent, lower than from the Carolines to Chicago. v It Is also believed that a majority of the present commission would try to make rates to enabler the’eastern trunk lines to carry more grain to New York and Boston as against -New Orleans and other Southern ports. And this Is said to be what Chan dler Is playing for. Moved! Mr. Jos. L. Rarey, the old reliable ' his tailor, has moved his place of business to No. 98, over M. Cnne’s store, south Broad street.
