HEARSE DRIVERS IN NEW YORK Prompted by n desire to shine In sporting circles, n number ot the citi zens of Albnny got together yesterday and after an earnest conference select ed a baseball team, an organization that Is entirely amateur, only Albany men being eligible for membership, and the salary clause to be completely stricken out. While the members of It have not for a good while pranced around on the diamond, they hope to soon be able to carry off games In league style. The personnel of the team jus- tlflos this hope, as a glance at the line-up will show. The pitcher Is D. M. Melvin. He Is a twlrler of far-famed ability, and promises If he can’t strike them out to lilt them occasionally, and thus mane the game Interesting. J. W. Hunt will do the backstopping. The basemen are J. P. Drinkwater, L. S. Plonsky and W..J. Denriso. R. T. Raley will take care of the short field, and the outfielders are L. H. Marks, Walter Mallard and B. A. Spring. Mr. Will McDonald will keep score, a hard job for this team, which won't stop niak- lug them. The umpire Is Assistant Cliiof Kemp, who promises to make them all behave. When the regular Albany ball team, the professional one, gets to playing better, the amateurs have promised to let them play a game with them, but not before. An agreement has been made that a fine of ten cents will be made against each one who makes more than two home runs in one game. New York May 23.—On account of the strike of coach and hearse drivers, few non-union funerals were held below Fourteenth - street yester day. Several were held up, and twenty-five had to be postponed. Causing Trouble and Delay of Funer als by Their Strike. Another Vagrant. Kmma Jones was given a room In the county Jail today. She objected to working, and being ‘ sixteen years of hge, and not in attendance upon any educational Institution, and' not having any visible means of support," to quote a section of the laws of the state of Georgia, she was taken charge of by the authorities, who just now are determined that everyone in Al bany shall do something. Vagrancy is the charge against the colored dam sel. But she needn’t be melancholy about it; there are plenty of others to keep her company up on the same charge now. Nobody regrets the present “droop- iness” of things more than the collec tors.- With them It’s a case of being out all the time and the Inclemency of the weather Is harrowing to their souls.
