ECKMAN ON HIS TRIP SOUTH There’s not even the suggestion of exaggeration in the statement that this new shipment contains more splendid brushes than we’ve ever seen offered in a city several {times the size of Albany—many real beauties priced from DISTINGUISHED NEW YORK DIVINE TELLS OF HIS VISIT TO THE GEORGIA CHAU TAUQUA — IMPRESSIONS OF THE SOUTH. Properly Pitted Glasses... Dr. Geqrge P. Eckman, pastor of St. Paul’s Methodist Episcopal church, New York City, who preached the opening sermon at the eighteenth an nual assembly of the Georgia Chau tauqua and also delivered two of the principal lectures of the week, has written a most interesting account of his trip in the May number of “The Communicant," a Most attractive little magazine that Is published in the in terest of his church. Under the caption, “Our Southern Trip,” Dr. Eckman tells of his voyage by steamer to Savannah, and then tells of “Savannah the Serene,” all ludes to the early operations of John Wesley in that vicinity, and makes some other historical references which would be interesting to our readers, but we can make room for only that part of the letter which relates to Al bany, the Georgia Chautauqua and Dr. Eckman’s impressions of the South. Beginning with the first paragraph, and then skipping to where Dr. Eck man was inquiring In Savannah for the schedule of the train that would bring him on to Albany, his delightful account of his Southern trip follows: The editor and his wife have made a peaceful Invasion of the Southland have added to their stores of knowl edge and to their treasures of mem ory. Albany lies in the very heart of the black belt, somewhat remote from'the great cen ters of commercial and intellectual activity. But It manifests an aspira tion for great achievements which al lies it in Bpirit with the most favored communities of the land. It would be too much to ascribe all its ambitions to the influence of the Chautauqua idea, but it is fair to say that the pro gress It has made is duo to the mental alertness and far-sighted sagacity of those of its, citizens who were broad enough to undertake this project. Impressions of the South. Whatever sentiment of aloofness to ward the-South yet remains In any Northern breast In consequence of po litical differences occasioned by the civil strife of forty years ago would disappear as If by magic If our people could all spend a week In such genial surroundings as we experienced dur ing our stay In Georgia. The radiant flowera of that sunny clime are a fair type of the unfailing iklndlinesa of the Southern people. The North we re joice to believe Is equally true-hearted and generous, hut the South knows how to show Its fraternal spirit more warmly, and does not practice that habitual reserve, so characteristic of our section. Modern Miracles replied, “At 9:15, sir!” Such Is the ludicrous consequence of keeping Eastern time for the city, and Central time for the railways. Nevetheless, we reached our train far in advance of the appointed time, though we started half an hour late, and the train de parted at the moment advertised in the schedule. At 7:30 the next morn ing we alighted at Albany, Ga., a little the worse for wear, but with cheerful hearts in prospect of seeing soniethlng unusual In the Immediate future.
