Two colored women came Into The Herald office yesterday afternoon with 1 an Infant—a boy—5 months old, and the proud mother said that “some: white folks ” had told Iher to bring her baby to the editor’ and let him “ see Christ on his leg.” The youngster was dressed in his best bib and tucker and the mother exposed its legs and pointed to some characters which were traced In the skin just below the knee joint on the right leg. Tl)e characters looked like a signature and address, as though someone had written his name and his address just below 1L To us the characters were not dis tinct, but the mother said that several "white folks” had read the characters In the upper line as spelling "Christ.” The two first letters were distinct, but. we couldn’t quite make out the entire word. The baby, though only five months old, has two teeth, and the mother says that these were visible when he was only four months old. This promising baby boy Is of a ginger-cake color and the characters on his leg here referred to are of a darker color. It Is evidently a birth mark, but the mother, encouraged by a colored sister who Is one of the "sanctified” cult, and who was first to’ discover the mysterious characters on the child’s leg, appears to attach some supernatural significance to It. j The child’s parents are Peter and Willie Baynes. | The "sanctified’’ woman who dis covered the birthmark which she In- 1 slsts are significant of the child’s fu-, ture in matters not given to ordinary human beings, when asked what she thought It meant, raised her hands, 1 looked wise and exclaimed: "It’s de Lawd’s wo’k, honey, an’ He knows!” Death of Mrs. Lizzie Daniel.
