A prominent cantaloupe grower
whose Helds were almost completely
devastated by the recent memorable
hailstorm stated to a Herald man Sat-
urday that It would now be difficult
for a person to realize that any dam
age had been wrought' by the ele
ments. ,
The cantaloupe Holds are again
green and flourishing. Fresh seed
were planted as soon after the de
structive storm as the ground could be
prepared for their reception, and since
that time conditions have greatly fav
ored , them. The vines are now well on
their way toward maturity, and are
beginning to put forth runners. They
will be blooming In a few days.
The grower further stated to The
Herald man that the crop from the re
planted Helds would not be very much
later than that marketed by growers
whose plantings were never disturbed,
The vines grow much more rapidly
now than they did earlier In the sea
son, and will be yielding fruit very
soon after the first of the season is
marketed.

DON’T GO TO SLEEP.
Tillman and’Bailey Say the Rate Law
Will Give Relief.
Washington, May 28. — Toward the
close ot the rate bill debate in the
senate the senators began to defend
their position In discussing railroad
legislation for months.
They pointed out what everybody
now admits, that they improved the
rate bill and made it stronger.
In the winter of 1905 there was great
clamor for the quick passage by the
senate of the Esch-Townsen'd bill,
which thousands of people thought
was just the thing. Now It has no ad
vocates In or out of congress.
The Democratic leaders seem quite
well satisfied with the Hepburn-Till-
man bill.
Senator Tillman and Senator Bailey
both said If the bill fails to give the
relief expected It will be because the
people themselves will go to sleep.
Senator Tillman In his manly way
publicly thanked President Roosevelt
for his strenuous help., Tillman feels
bitterly toward the President, but paid
him a tribute for his co-operation.
Senator Teller said there had not
been a more important question before
congress In fifty years, end he added:
“Much has been said about the con
stitutional lawyers here, as If this
were not the place of all others where
there should be constitutional lawyers,
as if it were a blight upon the charac
ter of a member of this body that he
should assume to stand for the constl-
tntlon of the United States, Effective
legislation on this subject must be
brought within the constitution of the
United States. We hare heard from
more than one lawyer here—and every
man here must admit it—that It Is not
yet a settled question what our power
may be. We know that we cannot
ourselves sit down and fix railroad
rates. We may have the.power, but
we have not the ability to make rates
and apply them to all the railroads of
the country. The question whether
we can leave the determination of
that matter to a commission Is yet
open.”
