Then the right reverend bishop spoke In an equally Impressive man ner on the words of the gospel, “Mary the Mother of Jesus." He commenced by reference to the gospel of the day wherein our Lord warned His disciples that they would meet opposition and persecution and even death at the hands of those to whom they were sent. Hence Cath olics should not he surprised at the reception given to some of the teach ings of the church, but ,tt did seem re markable that when so reasonable and scriptufal a doctrine as that of honor and influence of Mary the Mother of Jesus Was taught, that such opposi tion was raised by Christians. The bishop told of the moral law given to Moses and the Hebrew people on Sinai and how thpse laws wore of binding obligation on all men. That law after treating of man’s duty to God, In Its first regulation of his duty to crea tures, commanded honor, obedience, reBpect and love of parents; and Jesus the perfect man, had for His mother that honor, obedience, respect and love. As Jesus Is our model, In this we,may and should Imitate Him. The bishop sketched the gospel Btory of Jesus’ childhood, Which he said St. Luke must have reoelved from Mary, and told the story of Bethlehem and Nazareth, where Jesus was sub ject to Mary, and then told of the Saviour’s first miracle, that of Cana of Galilee, which was performed at Mary’s request. He told of the .power which Mary had with Jesus as His Mother, and said If that influence was exercised merely to save confusion to the bride groom, or host at the wedding feast, it was much more likely to be offered and with certainty of success in favor of those for whom Christ died. The Bishop made passing reference to the Influence of the Madonna In art — both painting and sculpture — and the Influence on rude men In giving them a higher concept of woman’s dig nlty and' position. The Bishop ex- The seretaolnshrdlu up up up upu pressed his satisfaction at having seen In oqe of the Protestant churches In Albany the picture on a window of Mary the mother and Jesus the child. The services concluded with the singing of the 0 Salutarls, the singing of the Tantum Ergo and the Benedic tion of the Blessed Sacrament,_glven by the Bishop.
