NEW YORK COTTON LETTER.
(By Wire to Clark & Oo.l
Now Orleans, May 30.
The Liverpool' market was very
quiet and uninteresting. Options on
the close were 1 point higher than
yesterday’s levelB and sales of spot
cotton aggregated 8,000 bales with
quotations reduced 0 points. No ca
bles were received, but In all proba
bility there was no news of interest to
send out.
Liquidation proceeded very quietly
around the opening and paid prices
showed a further decline, although no
attempt was made to repeat yester
day's performance. Trading was ex
tremely light and narrow and prompt
and satisfactory executions were made
difficult owing to the concessions that
had to be granted. All together there
was no news forthcoming of any char
acter affecting the trade as today be
ing Decoration Day in the North, the
government offices were closed and
therefore no weather map was pub
lished, likewise there was no session
of the eastern market.
The balance of the week further
liquidation will In all probability be
freely indulged in, ns traders do not
seem inclined to go over the bureau
with extensive interests on either side,
especially ns this market will he
closed Monday, the day on which the
report Is to be Issued, and hence no
opportunity will be afforded for the
closing of local commitments.
Yours very truly,
GIBERT & CLAY.

Savannah, Ga„ May 30.—The hottest
political meeting that Savannah has
seen In two years was held last night
at the Savannah theatre. It was
rally of the Citizens’ Club and the
orators were selected solely for the
purpose of answering the criticisms
made against the solicitor-general, the
newspapers and public officials gen
erally by the orators of the People’s
Democratic League.
Mr. A. A. Lawrence, a candidate for
representative, was one of the early
speakers. He gave his attention to
the utterances of those who talked
about the police Interfering with the
people ton election day.
Mr. Pleasant A. Stovall, who Is a
candidate for the senate, defended the
newspaper against attacks that have
been made. He and other speakers
referred particularly to speeches made
by Col. G. Arthur Gordon and his
brother, Major W. W. Gordon, Jr.
These two gentlemen have been very
active In the campaign as orators and
have said something that attracted at
tention.
Hon, W. W. Osborne was the last
speaker of the night. His appearance
upon the stage was the signal for a
great outburst of applause. Those
who saw It were impressed. He has
not lost his hold In Chatham. He
jumped upon his critics from the start
and defended himself against every at
tack that has been made. He fought
with some of the Are of four years
ago when he went before the people
nnd won a campaign in which charges
were made similar to those made this
year, viz., that he was not properly at-1
tending to his business in the prosecu-!
tlon of cases, and especially cases
against gamblers. Mr. Osborne is a
lighter who asks and gives no quarter, |
and last night he had ’em standing
up cheering for him. He did not speak
until after 10 o’clock and his remarks
extended over more .than half an hour, 1
but the crowd was not satisfied when
he quit. They wanted more. |
Throughout the meeting there were
references to the campaign of Col.
Estlll for governor, and hts name was
cheered at every mention. The Cit
izens’ Club is solidly behind the
Chatham county man In this race.
