Washington, D. 0., May 30.—Jas. S.
Sherman; ot New York, and James M.
Griggs, of Georgia, chairmen, respect,
ively, of the Republican and Demo
cratic congressional committees, are
getting ready to open the active cam
paign as sooyas congress adjourns.
While the Republicans have a ma-
JoHty in the present house in excess
of'100 members and are therefore rea
sonably expectant of retaining control
'of the Sixtieth congress they intend to
take no chances. There are unmistak
able signs, of discontent In a number
of Republican Btrongholds, and dozens
of members who were swept into office
by the momentum of the Roosevelt
landslide in 1904 are not certain of re-
election next November.
With the possible exception of Mas
sachusetts the Republicans are not ap
prehensive over conditions in the east.
The people of Massachusetts will be
treated to a feast of oratory this year.
The most finished spellbinders of both
parties, will tour the state and Massa
chusetts probably will be the most
fiercely debated ground of any state in
the union.

cerned over, conditions In a number of
Western stateB that heretofore have
been considered strongholds of their
party. Practically every congressman
in Wisconsin will have sharp opposi
tion for renomination tills fall. The
factional war between LaFollette and
Spooner plays no small part in the
trouble, and the LaFollette men are
endeavoring, by securing the defeat of
congressmen who favor Spooner, to
make the people believe that the se
nior senator has lost his influence.
For soipe years LaFollette has been
after the scalp of Representative Bab
cock, former chairman of the Republi
can congressional campaign commit
tee. His pursuit of Mr. Babcock iB
keener this year than ever before.
Two years dgb LaFollette threw his
support to Babcock’s Democratic op
ponent, and he probably will do like
wise in the coming campaign. The
only Wisconsin congressmen who,
from present appearances, will have
little trouble in returning are Each, of
the Seventh district; Davidson, of the
Eighth; and Minor, of the Ninth. The
rest will have to look closely after
their fences. •
In Michigan there are no issues of a
national character that promise re
sults for the Democrats. Practically
all the congressmen now in office are
assured of renomination. The only
cloud on the Republican horizon Is the*
growing sentiment against bossism
and machine politics,.and naturally it
is directed against the dominant
party.
South Dakota has two Republican
representatives in congress. The can
didates for congress, as well as the
candidates' for state office, will be
named at the state convention next
month. A hitter fight is on between
the two factions of the Republican
party led by Senators Gamble and
Ktttredge,' respectively. There is said
to he some danger lest the defeated
faction holt the party ticket, in which
event the state may possibly go Dem
ocratic and send two representatives
of that party to the house.
The Democrats of Minnesota are
hopeful of carrying two or three con
gressional districts this fall, but the
Republicans are not worrying much
over the outlook in that atate. Neither
do conditions in Indiana, Illinois or
Ohio give them serious concern.
Both congressional campaign man
agers will probably have to worry
along short of funds this year. The
insurance disclosures undoubtedly
scared some of the contributors, who
will be chary in the future about plac
ing money in the hands of political
organizations.
The Democrats intend to feature
tariff revision as ah issue. The public
ownership may affect the results in
some of the large cities, but thiB is not
expected to assume prominence this
year. A quiet canvass of the house
has been made recently to ascertain
how many of the members are for tar
iff revision and how many are for mu
nicipal ownership. It has not been
publicly disclosed who is hack of the
canvass, but it Is certain nevertheless
that the work has been done with un
usual thoroughness.
Some of the decorations are beauti
ful. Worthy of special attention are
the decorations of the Rialto Saloon,
which are the most elaborate ever seen
the city.
