The readiness with which the Geor gia Northern Railway accepted the rather exacting terms under which the City Council announced It would be willing to’ grant the road privileges asked for In the way of franchleo rights on Front street Indicates that the plans of that road for freight ter minal Improvements are deemed of far- reaching Importance. It will be necessary, In passing through Front street, for the Georgia Northern to construct a tunnel more than 300 feet In length, and at Its deep est point It will be many feet below the surface of the earth. The passing trains will be entirely out of the way of the thousands who cross Front street approaching and leaving the river bridge, and the arrangement will be Ideal from the standpoint of safety and convenience. There will also be a deep cut in Front street north of the alley In the rear of Muse & Co.’s warehouse, but this will be protected by an Iron fence, and spanned, at Pine street, by a wide bridge. The trackB of the new line will pass under the Coast Line bridge trestles, and connect with the present tracks at the union depot. It is the desire of the Georgia North ern officials to begin these Improve ments at once, and no time will be lost In breaking dirt as soon as the neces sary permission is given by the city authorities. As stated In The Herald, It Is pre sumed that the A. & N. road will ac cept the conditions .which have not proved objectionable to the G. N. THREE MEN KILLED BY FALLING ORE. W. E. FIELDS. Don’t Be Touchy. There are sofne people alwayB look ing out for Blights. They cannot pay a visit, they cannot receive a friend, they cannot carry on the Intercourse of the family, without suspecting some offense la designed. They are terribly touchy. If they meet an acquaintance In the street who happens to be pre occupied with business, they attribute his abstraction to some motive per sonal to themselves and take umbrage accordingly.' They lay on others the fault of their Irritability. A St of In digestion makes them see Imperti nences In everybody they come In con tact with. Innocent persons who nev er dreamed of giving offense are as tonished to Snd some unfortunate word or some momentary taciturnity mis taken for Insult Of course, such a mental condition la due to too much thinking about self and to an exagger ated self esteem, even though uncon scious. The best remedy Is to persist ently pnt thoughts of self out of mind. Find something more absorbing and more elevating to think about If yon are one of the tonchy ones, and you’ll soon lose the habit A Storm Above the Clouds. Professor John Wise, the eminent aeronaut, who lost hlB life In making a balloon ascension on Sept. 28, 1879, gave tbe following description of n thunderstorm which be once viewed from the “top side:’’ "The view of n stormcloud from nbove Is one of the most Interesting sights ever bebeld by mortal man. A storm viewed from above tbe clonds has tbe appearance of ebullition. The upper surface of the cloud Is bulged upward and outward and baa the resemblance of a vast sea of boiling, upheaving snow. Immedi ately above the stormcloud the air Is not so cold as It Is in tbe clearer at mosphere nbove or In the cloud itself. The falling of the rain can bo distinct ly heard, making a noise like n water fall over a precipice. The thunder heard nbove a stormcloud Is not loud, and tbe dashes of lightning appear like streaks of Intensely white light on the surface of the gray colored vapor.” A Life of Freedom. People sometimes think how delight ful it would be to be quite free. But n flail, ns Ruskin says, is freer than a man, and, as for a fly, it is “a black incarnation of freedom.” A life of so called pleasure and self indulgence is not a life of real happiness or true freedom. Far from It. If we once bo-' gin to give way to ourselves we fall under a most intolerable tyranny. Oth er temptations are in some respects like* that of drink. At first, perhaps, It scams delightful, but there is bitter ness at the bottom of the cup. Mon drink to satisfy the desire created by previous indulgence. So it Is In other things. Repetition soon becomes a craving, not a pleasure. Resistance grows more and more painful. Yield ing, which at first, perhaps, afforded some Hllfrht and temporary gratifica tion, soon ceases to give pleasure and, even If for a -time it procures relief, ere long becomes odious itself. The merchants report that the us ual falling off of trade in the summer has set in. , White Vest Tree Nobody seems to bo bothering over the heat question, which is, after all, the easiest way to dispose of it. THE MARKETS Died Standing. The incident of Uatlsbou—a French officer, though mortally wounded, rides hack to Napoleon, reports* the capture of the city and then falls from his sad dle dead—is paralleled by a story of Gettysburg. An officer of the Sixth Wisconsin regiment walked up to Colo nel Dawes, who was in command— Colonel Bragg was In Washington on crutches. The officer ^Vas very erect and very pale. Dawes and Doubleday both thought he was coming with a re port or to receive orders. But he was not.* lie had a favor to ask.; ‘‘Colo nel.” lia said to Dawes, ‘‘will you tell the folks at home I died as a man and a soldier should?” Then he unbuttoned bis coat. Ills whole side was shot away. It was his last effort. He died standing. What are you waiting for? We have just received another lot of ARCTIC and WHITE. MOUN- TAIN Freezers.
