During the 300 years which have elapsed since Guy Fawkes was dis covered In the vaults of the houses of parliament the yeomen of the guard have never failed religiously to per form the ceremony of searching the cellars on the eve of the assembly of parliament Originally an Important duty, It bas now developed Into a quaint anil picturesque ceremony. Be fore tbc old houses of parliament were burned down Jn 1834 the search was a reality. Now It Is a mere ceremonial, but one which the public would wish mulntulned. Before that time every nook and every corner of the dark and noisome vaults hud to be carefully seurcbed. How different the ceremony Is con ducted at the present day we learn from Sir Regluald HenneU’s Interest- lug book. The officials of the lord great ch&iuberluln, the special detec tive police of the house of parliament, with the commissioner or deputy eom- pilssluner of ‘police, assemble la the princes' or peers’ robing room and await the coming of tlq- yeomen of the guard, consisting of an exon, the ser- geunt major and ten yeomen. On their arrival n procession Is formed, headed by the chief of police In charge. Parti sans ure laid aside, and each yeoman Is bunded one of the same little oil lumps which have probably been In use from time immemorial. The exou gives the word, the proces sion moves off, and the search com mences. Cautiously descending by Iron ladders—for the yeomen are no longer young—and -traversing Iron grating floors, they gradually descend to the vaults below. The wuIIb nr<f all painted or colored wblte, and under the glare of the modern electric lamps, which brlllluntly Illuminate every part of the vaults,* It would be difficult for the smallest object to remain undiscov ered.. Slowly the party reuscends to the princes' chamber, lamps are re turned, partlsuus are shouldered, the oxen reports to the lord great charn- borlulu that the search has ,beeu well and truly carried oul and that tub houses of parliament can assemble in safety, the official part of the ceremony Is over, 'and the guard is dismissed frpm duty. The men tbeu proceed, according to nnclcut custom, to the offices of Messrs. Bellamy, tho old firm of wine mer chants, where by special permission the gallant yeomen drink the king's health In the best port. In 1700 the firm of Bellamy applied to the authori ties of the houses of parliament to be permitted to rent and use as wine cel lars one portion of the empty vnults. This wus granted, ami the custom was Initiated by the founder of the firm, "Old Bellamy,’’ so to arrange the search that the yeomen of the guurd should brlug It to nil end at the wine stores. There the announcement was made, "All's well,” and the guard, be- lug drau'n up, drank the king’s or queen’s health In Bellamy's old port— “God save the klug." The wine cellars have been removed elsewhere, but the good custom remains. | ' The yeomen of the guard ure a most fasclnutiug Institution, the first perma nent body guard of England's sover eigns nud the first permanent corps of trained soldiers In our history. ’ Iml- tuted perhaps from tho Scottish guard of tho French kings, tho corps wns farmed us far back ns the year I486. When llenry VII. landed in England from Normandy lie wns accompanied by u siuull guard of English ami Welsh who laid shared his exile. They were with him at Bosworth. and surrounded by them ho received the crown of Eng land. It was this body of personnl attend ants that became, in September, 14S5, the yeomen of the guard, ever since the personal bodyguard of the sovereigns of England. It still retains the pic turesque dress with the original title of yeomen, which U wore under Its first captain, John de Vere, carl of Ox ford. Tho original duty of the corps was to protect the king in battle and otherwise, and he wns accompanied by his yeomen wherever lie went The yeomen of the guard have taken part in many n battle and siege and In most royal pngcauts from the Field of the Cloth of Gold to the opening of parlia ment. When his majesty the king opens parliament the beef caters will be In close attendance on the state coach. The office of captain of the guard is a political one ami changes with the gov ernment, hilt the lieutenant, the en sign, (lie clerk of the cheque, or ad jutant, nnd the exons are required to have served in the army or marines and have seen war service. The yeo men must have been noncommissioned officers In the army or marines of ap proved nud distinguished service, and the appointments, as may be Imagined, are the most highly prized of any which are open to old soldiers. The yeomen of the guard are very fre quently confounded with the warders of the Tower, hut they are now a dis tinct body. When Henry VIII. relin quished the Tower ns a residence he was not unmindful of the dignity at taching to It Twelve yeomen of the guard were left behind as Tower ward ers, who tlibn became a separate or ganization, with a slightly different dress, hut with the same pay and al lowances. The nickname of beef eaters, which has been bestowed on the yeomen of the guard, Is of comparatively modern origin, and It Is amusing to recall how writers have endeavored to account far It—London Globe. At Victor lingo’s Table. Victor IIu-o—a titan In laborious- dess—zuffarud in childhood from con stitutional delicacy, wrote Henry La- boiichcre. He kept an Irish cook, who hail learned how to roast In the service of the dean of Jersey or Guernsey. She hated “raesHes" and "stock” gravy and herself intteDded her master at table, not allowing the parlor maid to go near him. If she thought a dish unwhole some she refused to let him partake of It. She had her reward In the hearti ness with which he ate of her roast and boiled vianda. She and Mme. Drouet, the tactful friend and secreta ry of Victor Hugo through the greater part of his literary career, were agreed ih satisfying to the full bis fondness •for early spring vegetables and new potatoes. As he Insisted on them be ing passed around the table, which was spread for many disciples, admirers, bangers on aud courtiers, they must have cost a fortune. 1 sometimes saw asparagus served without stint that would buve cost from 1 Yj francs to 2 fyancs u stalk. Victor Hugo helped himself largely and culled for more. There Isn't much difference In the looks of the bottles and labels of "Bo hemian Export Beer,” made by the Acme Brewing Co., of Macon, and “Export Bohemian Beer,” the cheap Imitation, made by the mythical Bo hemian Brewing Co., of St. Louis. But there 1b a world of difference In the qualities of the beers—Just that differ ence between the genuine and a cheap Imitation. Insist on getting the gen uine "Bohemlap Export Beer” of the Acme Brewing Co. 28-6t FOR THE BEST Values in Marble and Granite for artistic work manship, and the finest material in MONUMENTS Headstones, etc., try The Albany Marble ana Granite Works.
