Options abroad failed to respond to the advance that occurred in the cis- Atlantic market yesterday and on the close recorded a loss of 1 point from the previous day’s levels. No cables were received to throw any light on the disappointing price changes. Spot sales showed some Improvement over recent transactions, the total today be ing 7,000 bales, at an advance of 2 points. The strength that the summer months displayed today gave the en tire list a buoyant appearance. This can undoubtedly he traced to the fact that there exlstB a decided short In terest In these positions, and with the approach of July considerable concern Is manifested by shorts who have been covering their commitments In no un certain manner. The steadiness of futures seems to have awakened a more general desire to buy spot cotton —at any rate a very much better de mand has been in evidence today, hut the desired grades are reported so scarce that however insistent the de mand may be It is hardly likely that transactions will roach beyond the av erage. Nevertheless it Is interesting to note that, should the desire to replenish sup plies-become imperative a far greater interest in the market would naturally be created, also fulfill a long desirdd want. Oar crop reports today are al most of one accord, exceedingly fa vorable, and indicate that the plant is mnklng very satisfactory progress, Here and there complaints are made of excessive moisture and the conse quent Inability of farmers to properly work their fields, hut taken as a whole the weather has been as favorable as could well be expected. Furnished for Dally Herald Readers by Clark & Co. British Bulls were not much in evi dence this morning. Liverpool was due 2 higher, but came unchanged on featureless market of 5,000 bales sales. Early and late cables predicted u gradual decline to 5 pence. Liverpool sales continue "painfully small.” Looking backward, and taking "past performances” as a guide, one can figure a crop of- almost any size, but the seasons have more to do with the out-turn than arithmetic or alge bra. The best Intelligence In the trade regards the acreage report as a huge Joke. "Dreamers" who fancy a crop of 11,000,000 Is a “fair one”on the acre age had best “sleep on” and dream again. Two more weeks of sunshine will make the July condition report read 90. It is a mistake Co suppose that all the fertilizer was used on corn, can taloupes and watermelons. A few “stray sacks” here and there were used on cotton.. The “complaint bore and calamity howler” is conspicuous by his ab sence. The "scarcity of labor” cry Is heard no more. Can it be that this crop Is an “automatic cultivator”? The short side of this market Is a regular ’’life raft.” Our opening was 3 to 4 lower, with little or no business doing. Port receipts were 7,000, against 10,- 000 last year. Counterfeit or “Old Confed.” is gopd enough to use In buying the market.
