COTTON PICKINGS.
Furnished for Daily Herald Readers
by Clark & Co.
Washington, June 13.—Jorge Munez,
the Guatemalan minister, late last
night received a cablegram from Pres
ident Cabelra confirming the previous
advices that the government troops
«had won an overwhelming victory,
and denying the report of reverses.
American Steamer Cornered.
Washinton, June 12. — The United
States cruiser Marblehead has the
American steamer-Empire cornered in
the harbor at Corlnto, Nicaragua, and
the moment the little American vessel
attempts to leave the Nicaraguan coast
It la believed the warship will seize It
and bring It to account for the part
played In assisting Guatemalan revolu
tionists.
Both the state and navy depart
ments have been adviBed of the pres
ence of the warship and the steamer
In the Nicaraguan port and the cabi
net considered the case today’ and Is
believed to have decided on punishing
the American ship for ltB activity in
the Central American revolution.
Empire's Mission?
The Empire sailed from San Fran
cisco for Central America several
weeks ago, and is said to have carried
more than 100 men and a number of
field guns and much ammunition to
the Guatemalan revolutionists at San
Jose. After unloading its cargo at San
Jose the steamer sailed back to Co
rlnto, where It had coaled previous to
going to Guatemala.
It Is charged that the Empire acted
for a short time as a sort of navy for
the Guatemalan revolutionists who are
attempting to overthrow President
Cabrera, and terrorized the little re
public, which has hitherto always con
fined its warfare to the land.
Nicaragua is believed to have vio
lated neutrality by allowing the Em
pire to coal at Corlnto and start for
San Jose, when it is alleged that no
attempt was made to conceal the pur
pose of the Empire nor the nature of
its cargo.
Liverpool was due unchanged to 1
down this morning, but came in 3
down, with sales of 10,000, closing
quiet, 5 to 6 down, for the day.
The market continues in a state of
uncertainty, due solely to the confuB-
ion injected in it by the bureau at
Washington.
As the department now admits that
the increase in acreage over last year
is barely 4 per cent., it becomes more
and more plainly evident that the
most extraordinary conditions are
necessary from now to the end of thb
season to produce a crop that will
even approximate next year’s mini
mum requirements.
The estimated receipts for today are
G,000, againBt 14,000 last year.
Hot Pipe IHtes the TnniTni'.
“Yon see smoking tobacco advertised
every now and again guaranteed not
to bite the tongue. Dealers sell it. of
course, but Inwardly they smile at the
Idea." So spoke a tobacconist. “You
see. It's this'wuy. The fire In the pipe
will bite the tongue If the tobacco
burns too fast—namely. If It is. a very
loose long cut tobacco or a very short
dry cut and not packed closely enough
in the howl. There is a point where
tobacco may he too closely packed to
draw and a point where it may be so
loosely packed that it burns fast, and
minute sparks pass through the stem
and reach the smoker’s mouth. These
are the causes of burnt tongues.”—
