Hoggard Drug Co., • Miracle blocks are fire proof. Albany Pressed Stone Co. The record of the Albany Are de partment has been an exceptional one during the first five months of 1906. There have been more fires, but the losses have been smaller in proportion than they have ever been during a five months period. A Herald reporter was very much surprised to learn from Chief James this morning that the number of fires during the first five months had been more than they had ever been during corresponding period of any pre vious year. “The number of fires in 1906,” said Chief James this morning, “Is greater than the number for a like period of any year. The number rf fires Is con stantly on the increase, which is one of the natural results of the growth of the city. Last year was our biggest year so far as the number of fires are concerned, and the indications are that this year will break the record of its predecessor. For the last month there has been quite a lull in fires. In fact, the department has responded to very few calls, but you just wait until Oc tober and November, and you’ll see the fire inddles will, be kept pretty busy. “So far this year we have had gratt- fyingly good luck with fires,” contin ued Chief James, ’’luck that has been truly remarkable considering the method of receiving fire alarms. The need for the Gamewell fire alarm sys tem grows coiftinually, and I hope that it will not be long before this need, already recognized by the city fathers, will be supplied. Otherwise, the de partment Is well equipped, and Is able to' cope with most fires with satisfac tory success.” DON’T MONKEY WITH YOUR EYESIGHT. That’s slang, but it’s expressive, and good advice.
