A writer in the London News de scribes a little town of nnts which he observed under a magnifying glass at a recent exhibition. He says: “I watobed' them for a long time, and saw that they are very wise, for they believe in co-operation; that Is, In helping one another. Some grain had been scattered In this little country of theire, and they were gathering it to gether in one place; Sometimes, when 'one ant found that he alone could not move a large grain, he fetched helpers, and, so working together, they shifted it, and placed each grain by the side of another, like a builder would lay his brldks when making a wall. “They had formed quite a little city, and had even made roads and streets, along j which they were „continually running at their work. Yes, Ant-town, for we must give their city a name, was full of busy little people. All had some duty to do. Those who were not ‘workers’ were ‘soldiers.’ These trot ted up and down the roads around the edge of the town, ap If ready to keep off any enemy, or give the others no tice that danger was coming. “The Intelligence of these wonderful little Insects 1b marvelous. A traveler In the West Indies tells bow thousands Of ants were once Journeying, when they came to a railway. Time after time, while crossing It, a train would come along and kill hundreds of them, so what do you think these wise ants did? They actually made tunnels un derneath the railway lines, and so passed through safely. "Now English ants do not lay In a store of food for the winter, aB many think, but they collect leaves, fijr they can feed on the funguB which grows on damp leaves. However, they do store their eggs during the winter, so that the young workers can be hatched .in the summer. It Is then that the ants again show how Intelligent and wise they are, for the eggB are hatched by the warmth of the sun, and In the ant-hills there are numerous little rooms, called 'cells,' some near the surface of the earth and others farther underneath, and ants shift the eggs every day either upstairs or down stairs, in order that they shall not get too hot or too cold, for that would kill the little ants inside. "I sometimes think that ants must be Jolly people, for they are so busy, and seem bo full of life and health. It Is no doubt because they are always trying to do something, for lazy peo ple are not really happy!” Wise and Otherwise/ “Procrastination Is, a dangerous thlflg In business, Isn’t It?” said the young man who Is anxious to learn. “I should say so,” answered Dustin Stax. “You don’t know how thankful I am that I made my pile before all that furore for Investigation started In.”—Washington Star. “And you call yourBelf a chauffeur! Why, you blathering son of a pushcart, where did you learn?” , “At a correspondence school, sir.”— London Punch. “Yes, when Dubley tells an IriBh story there's no mistaking It. “You know it’s Irish right away, eh?” “Yes, Indeed; he says 'Be Jabbers’ after every sentence.”—Catholic Stan dard and Times. "Have you had any trouble with your heart?” “Not lately; I’m living with my third wife."—Cleveland Plain Dealer. The slncerest tribute that can be paid to superiority Is imitation. The many imitations of DeWitt’s Witch Hazel Salve that are now before the public prove it the best. Ask for De- Witt’s. Good for burns, scalds, chaffed skin, eczema, tetter, cuts, bruises, bolls and piles. Highly recommended and reliable. -Sold by Albany Drug Co., Hllsman-Sale Drug Co. Coolness of Modern Lovers. The Young .Man Undoubtedly Meant Well, But — i Yvette .Gullbert, the noted French aotress, at a dinner In New York had been complimented rather awkwardly, relates the New York Tribune. "Your intention was not bad,” said the actress, good-humpredly, In Her quaint English. “But you were awk ward. I will admit that. “So awkward you were that I am re minded of a happening, a Parisian happening. Listen. This Is It: “A Parisian gave a dinner. All the world was there. Jewels glittered on white throats.'. Orders and ribbons crossed white shirt bosoms. In a word, elegance complete. "And tatter dinner, after the ladles had gone upstairs, the men, over their coffee and cigars and liqueurs, talked as men will, of love., "And all of a sudden the host cries In a loud voice; “’I will tell you, gentlemen, this la the truth; I have kissed the South Sea Island maiden. I have kissed the slim Indian beauty. And the girls of Eng land, of Germany, even of America, I have kissed; but It is most true that to kiss my wife Is beBt of all.’ “Then a young man cries from across the table: “‘By heavehs, sir, you are right there!’” Constipation makes the cold drag along. FUNNYGRAPHS The pen is mightier than the sword, but is often more sordid. When we aBk for good eggs we mean eggs that are good physically, not morally. No, Maude, dear; having the hair shingled will scarcely prevent water on the brain. The nearest approach to chaos a family man experiences 1b during house-cleaning time. The dyspeptic may be Justified In saying to his cooking school wife, ‘You make me sick!” Accidents will happen, and a girl must expect to have her heart broken once In a while. When an undesirable young man fairly dotes on a girl she generally looks around for an antidote. The only way a man can get ahead of the gas company Is to put the tube In his mouth and turn It on full head.
