A number of bids have been re ceived by Superintendent William Lockett, of the Waterworks and Elec tric Light Commission, for the con struction of the new artesian well which it has been determined by the city authorities to have sunk at the waterworks station. At a meeting of the City Council several weeks ago the commission was empowered to secure bids, award a contract and have sunk a well of 8-lnch diameter to the 800-foot water bearing stratum. The commission has been advertising for bids, and those in hand, with others that may be re ceived, will be considered by the com mission at its next meeting. The meeting would already have been held several days* ago but for the absence from the city of Commissioner White- head. The well will be completed, it is hoped, before the last of the summer. Should it bring to the surface the volume of water confidently expected, it will solve Albany’s problem of water supply for some years to come. From Ladies’ Home Journal. A woman who lives in an inland town, while going to a convention in a distant city, spent one night of the journey on board a steamboat. It was the first time she had ever traveled by water. She reached her journey’s end extremely fatigued. To a friend who remarked it she replied: Yes, I’m tired to death. I don’t know as I care to travel by water again. I read the card in my state room about how to put the life-pre- server on, and I thought I understood it; but I guess I didn’t.
