HARRIS PLUMBING CO,
•Phone 255,
Washington, June 25.—News of the
engagement of the Right Hon. Austen
Chamberlain, M. P„ son of Joseph
Chamberlain, the liberal-unionist lead
er, to Miss Dundas, daughter of a Brit
ish army officer, recalls to the older
persons In official life here an inter
esting romance in which the young
man nnd his famous father both fig
ured. When Joseph Chamberlain came
over to the United States a number of
years ago one of' the objects of his
visit was to find out what kind of a
girl Miss Mary Endicott (his present
wife) was His son, Austen Chamber-
lain, had met Miss Endlcott in Europe,
fell very much in love with her, and
asked his father’s consent to address
her. The famous statesman was some
what chary of American wives for
English gentlemen.
Before giving his consent he con
cluded to meet the lady in person; and
investigate herself nnd family. A night
or two after his arrival in this country
there was a ball at the British em
bassy. Mr. Endicott, then Mr. Cleve
land’s secretary of war, and his daugh
ter were among the guests. Mr. Cham
berlain particularly noticed a stately
and beautiful girl whoso unaffected
dignity greatly, pleased him. He asked
to bo presented. To his surprise and
gratification he was introduced to Miss
Endicott. During the entire evening
he paid her assiduous attention. The
next day he called at her father’s resi
dence. He soon became satisfied as to
the social status of the Endlcotts. He
finally succumbed to the charms of the
fair girl, and instead of sanctioning
Austen’s suit addressed her himself
and presented a handsome young step
mother instend of a prospective fiance
to the waiting young lover. Austen
Chamberlain accepted the inevitable
and is said to be respectfully devoted
to his stepmother. Now he has be
come engaged to the beautiful Miss
Dundas and their wedding will take
place on the 21st of next month at SL
Margaret’s, Westminster.

The Old Skinflint.
Several years ago, when Powell &
Plimpton kept a di*ug and grocery
! house on Washington street, in Buf-
! falo, says the Buffalo Times, a farmer
I from Williamsville drove to Buffalo to
. buy a bill of goods for his country
| store. After coming downstairs and
waiting for his goods to be packed, he
noticed several men using the speak
ing tube. After awhile his curiosity
got the better of him, and he asked
the proprietor what that thing was.
“A speaking tube,” said the proprie
tor. “Speak to someone upstairs and
see how it works.”
“What will I say,” said the farmer,
going over to the tube.
“Oh, say anything you like,” said
. the proprietor.
| “Hay!” shouted the farmer. “Are
the goods Mr. Parsons of Williams
ville ordered ready?”
“Yes,” said the man upstairs, “the
goods are ready, but we are lodking
the old skinflint up. We think he is
kind of shaky.”
