A Teacher’s Institute in Murray
County.
Why doesn’t Murray county
have a Teachers Institute? This
question we have frequently
heard asked by educate* s and
friends of education, not only
in our own but in other coun¬
ties. Is it because our people
are asleep on educational inter¬
ests? We trust such is not the
case. We believe the majority
of our citizens are wide awake
on this subject Is it then be¬
cause the rural teachers of our
county are fully up to the
standard on Inodes of teaching
and educational interests? Most
assuredly not; for notwithstand
ing the great number of high
schools in our villages, a large
majority of our youths are
dependent upon rural schools
for their early education.
Then, to promote the prog¬
ress of our country, we must
make the country school some¬
thing more than a thing of
name—we must make it a liv¬
ing reality.
A monthly Teachers Insti¬
tute would be a great factor in
improving the capacities 1 of our
teachers, and necessarily result
in advantage to the pupils en¬
trusted to their care. They
would do more efficient work.
Twenty years ago our farm¬
ers all had their hay cut with
the “arrastiong” mower and
rake; now they use the latest
improved machinery. Have
such changes been wrought in
our schools as in every depart¬
ment of agriculture?
But. says one, we have
“Summer Normal Institutes”
held expressly for teachers.
Even so; but how many of our
teachers but how many of, our
teachers are able to avail them
selves of the facilities they offer?
The Summer Normals are
generally held in July or Au¬
gust, just when our public
schools are in full blast. If
they were held at some more
convenient time, how many
of our district teachets receive
salaries sufficient to go? While,
on the other hand they could
well afford to attend a Teach
ere Institute which convened
at some place in the coirnty
once each month. There they
could exchange views and id
eas with ©ach other and all be
equally benefit ted.
Then, let the 0. S. C. or a
member of our county board
of Education set a time for the
teachers of our county to meet
at Spring Place, organize and
elect officers. This done and
we can hail the day as not far
distant when the educational
interests of Murray will be sec¬
ond to no county in the state.

Last Sunday Rev. George
C Rankin preached a powerful
sermon iD Chattanooga graph
ally describing the hei¬
nous crimes of the city. The
man who boldly attacks these
strongholds of the devil is cer
tainly brave, and good people
should stand by him and the
result will be the uplifting of
Society. The young people of
our land must be protected from
the clutches of unprincipled vil
viilains who would gladly sap
tile foundations of virtuous so
oirfy.

Once, in fact, a young lady
told a New York neurologist
that she thought her pancreas
did not emulsify sufficiently
the fat which she had eaten
with her food. The worthy
man was so horror strickeu
at this display of knowledge
that he at once exercised all his
mighty influence to banish for¬
evermore from the sight of a
woman a book on anatomy and
physiology. This dangerous
apple of knowledge that she
possesses a pancreas, should be
guarded with flaming sword
from any daughter of Eve who
should desire to possess it.—

Miss Jennie Jerome met Lord
Randolph Churchill for the first
time at dinner in Parris. After
dinner she said to her sister,
referring to Lord Randolph,
“That's the brightest man I
ever met; and I am going to
marry him!” It is reported
that Lord Randolph made an
almost identical remark con¬
cerning her. At all events they
became engaged almost imme¬
diately after their meeting and
were married shortly after¬
ward.

of them with him. The other
