THURSDAY AUGUST 8, WM.
The Geological Survey.
The proposed completion ot
,tlie geological survey of our
state should receive the favor—
a ole consideration of the legis -
lat mv.
It is the duty of a great state
to know itself, and its first
vtudy should be the study ot
it* owu resources. So tar as
the old geological survey pro*
greased, the results were satis*
tactory enough, but the work
received an untimely check.
Added to our variety ot other
products, the mineral wealth
of Georgia, properly ascertain¬
ed and developed, would make
our state an empire in itself.
Wherever the geologist has
left his mark in the mountains
of north Georgia, outside capi¬
tal has rushed in to take ad¬
vantage of his discoveries. It
will be a mistaken and a waste¬
ful policy to keep our people
ignorant ot the vast treasures
hidden in our bills and valleys.
The result of such a course
will transfer our most valuable
mineral lands to foreign capi¬
talists for a mere song. As far
as practicable the people of
Georgia should reap the bene¬
fit ot their hard earned posses¬
sions. By continuing the geo¬
logical survey, and making pub
lie the. results, the owneis of
the vast material resources un¬
der their feet will know the
value of their property. They
will then be able to make ad*
vantageous alliances with capi¬
talists
We advocate this geological
survey because it is directly in
the line of true progress. From
first to last it has been the
Constitution’s custom to throw
itsell heartily into any] move¬
ment tending to advance the
material development of, our
commonwealth. It feels that
the opportunity now suggested
is too full of promise to be
wasted. With our imperfect
and unfinished survey, millions
of capital have been invested
here. Millions more will come
when the pathway is once
blazed out. With this capital
will come intelligent, self sup¬
porting immigrants.
To secjre these blessings of
capital, population and devel¬
opment we have only to uncov¬
er our inexhaustible natural
wealth and make it known to
the world.—Atlanta Constitu¬
tion.
Rev. Sam Jones is preaching
at the Methodist camp meet¬
ing at High Bridge, Ky. It
seems that he las there struck
the toughest crowd of phansa*
ical Christians aud sinners he
has yet encountered. At his
first sermon he only had six
mourners. He is determined
to wake the people up before
he quits them, however. The
following is the way he talks
to them:
“It you get in heaven th©
way you are doing now it's be¬
cause God don’t hold you re¬
sponsible. It’s like the first
kind of engines, which used to
lmvejust two wheels. They
jau ou schedule time, but that
>vas only three miles an hour.
Now they have put on eight
more wheels and they can go
eixiy miles an hour. Will you
i«*.i God put on seme mne
wheels? Lord have mercy on
jjbvsy little two wheeled iel-
lows; they have got to be sides
tracked and put out of the way.
Brethren, I don’t go much on a
man who don’t prav in pub¬
lic”
Grant is a Keltic term fo
family or tribe. The “grant
father” and “grant mother”
were everywhere the eldest
parents ot the whole family.
Grant was originally a tribe
name or folk name, like a
score of others, such as Dull,
Cameron, Scot, etc., Iulaigh
(ulick) is a Gaelic term for
chieftain, a fact whicu the old
time Grants would be well
aware of; and it is likely the
great family soldier was not
unmindful of that part of the
Scottish tradition.
The Georgia legislature has
at last capped the climax. A
bill has beeh introduced taxing
bachelors who have arrived at
the age of thirty years two dol¬
lars and fifty cents for the en¬
joyment of this single blessed¬
ness. Thi» tax our unmarried
friends a r e to pay year after
year so long as they obstinate¬
ly refuse to stand at the blush¬
ing alter of Hymen. Oh! states
mensbip, statesmenship, in our
moments of melancholy we al¬
most conclude thee a thing of
the past.
According to the figures fur¬
nished by the Navy Depart¬
ment Mr. John Roach has re*
ceived a very handsome sum
from the government since he
has been in the shipbuilding
business. Since 1862 the to*
tal amount paid him by the
Navy Department is $10,333,*
626.
A Kan«as man has sent Mr.
Blaine a magnificent saddle
horse, valued by the Kansas
man at $1,500. If this black
don’t carry Bre’r Blaine any
more kindly than the blacks
down here did last year, it is
evident that he ought to bunt
sandy roads.
