Thanks Returned
The following is the text of
the president's thanksgiving i
proclamation: !
By the presided* of the Uni
ted States—A Proclamation:
7 he American people have al
ways abundant reason to be
thankful to Almighty God,|
whose watchful care and guid-;
big hand have been manifested
in every stage of their nation,
and guarding and protecting
them in time of peril and safe
ty, leading them in the hour of
darkness and of danger. It is
fitting -and piopev that the na¬
tion t hus favored should, one
day in every year, and for that
purpose specially appointed,
publicly acknowledge God and
return thanks to Him for all
His gracious gifts.
Therefore!. Grover Cleve¬
land, president of the United
States of America, do hereby
designate and set apart Thurs¬
day, the twenty sixth day of
November instant, us a day of
public thanksgiving and pray¬
er and do invoke the observ¬
ance of the same by all the peo 1 -
pie of the land. On that day
let all secular business be sus¬
pended, and let the people as
sem’de at their usual j daces of
worship, and with prayer and
songs of praise, devoutly testi.
fy their gratitude to the Giver
of every good and perfect gift
for all tin t he has done tor us
in the year that has passed; for
our pre.se vation as a united na¬
tion and for our deliverance
from the shock and danger ot
political convulsL.i'i, for the
blessings of peace and for our
safety and quiet while wars
and rumors of w^rs have agi¬
tated and afflicted other na¬
tions of the earth; for our se¬
curity against the scourge of
pestilence, which in other lands
has claimed its death by thous¬
ands, and filled the streets with
mourners, for the plenteous
crops which reward the labor
of the husbandman, and in
crese mi;' nation's wealth; and
for contentment throughout ou
borders which follow in the
train *of prosperity and abun¬
dance; and let there also be, on
tlm day thus set apart, a reun¬
ion of families sanctified and
chastened by tender memories
and associations, and let the
social intercou se of friends,
with pleasant memories and
ties of affection and strengthen
the bonds ot kindly feeling, aud
I t us by no means
while we give thanks, enjoy
the comforts which haveciow
lied our lives, that truly grate¬
ful hearts are inclined to deeds
of charitiy; and that the kin 1
and thoughtful remembrance
of the poor will double the
pleasures of our condition, and
render out praise and thanks
gi- ing more accceptable in the
sight of the Lord.
