‘KBAT MUNS”
On Old Maids.
While old maids are just as
nice and neat as a new pin, and
usually kind and pleasant, yet
it is always with a sense of re'
gret that l look upon one-of
these creatures ot creation, be
cause I iuvariably feel like she
is committing a crime by with¬
holding herself from the ties of
matrimony. But perhaps not
so, for in some cases the old
girls may not be responsible
lor her single condition, having
all through life kept in play
the few attractions which dame
Nature saw fit to bestow upon
her person, and even then fail¬
ed to catch one ot the wild
loids ot creation, Well, in
case you fail to get off pretty
easy, continue to try and dont
become despondent, for the
poet says:
‘‘Never was a goose so gray,
But what some day,
Soon or late;
An honest gander would come
that way,
And take her for his mate.”
The mate is hard to find
some times, and when found,
frequently difficult to capture
and again folks often make a
mistake in marrying as well as
other things, then they will
tu u s and growl around all
thiough life like two ill cats.
It is right funny to see the ae
tions of ladies when they begin
to verge upon old maiden hood.
They will be afflicted with a
strong mania for making ciazy
quilts ruffled bonnets, knitting
garments of all kinds and col'
ors, a#d doing any thing under
the sun to while away the
lingering hours of time. There
is no fixed age when a lady is
transformed into an old maid,
for age affects people different¬
ly. And we know of no one
invariable reason why we have
old maids. Some seem to be
so created, others Lorn choice,
and many because they can’t
help themselves, After all
the sweets of the old maid’s
life are told, and canted by the
sweetest voice, methinks there
is a vacancy, which can only
be filled by the tendei affection
of a kind, devoted husband,
musical voices and busy feet of
children as they prattle around
the home fireside. I don’t un¬
derstand the nature of old girls
very thoroughly, not having
had cause to deal with them
as extensively as some other
classe?. But I always was
afraid that something would
go wrong when one of them
wa9 near, aud then no telling
what would be to pay. Be¬
cause I have seen them before
now make cats, chickens and
dogs bide out just lor nothing
in the world that I could see
but to have something to maul
on with their favoiite weapon,
the h-oom. And then some
are so kind and nice that you
will love them in spite ot your
self. And to sum the whole
matter up, they are kind ofeu*
riotis beings, but awfully sweet
before they get to be old
maids. Keat Muns.
