THUR9DAY DECEMBER IO, IMS.
‘KEAT MUNS”
On Town Boys.
It don’t take a head brim full
of wisdom to see a great many
funny things abqut boys, But
no one knows, without a big
expei lence, the difference be
twerp country and town boys.
Most town boys, and especially
those of small places, are not
worth three cents a car load,
because they are usually
brought up in idleness, nothing
to do but lounge about on the
»feet coiners through the day,
waiting for the curtain of night
to drop its dark folds around
them, that they may be hid
from things, which atfirst make
them ashamed. Well, the boys
are not responsible for this, for
I never saw a boy that was
worth anything, but what was
also extremely fond of mischief
and devilment. Some parents
after they have accumulated
two or three hundred dollars,
feel rich and think their chil
dren must have an easy time,
so they begin* to indulge the
boys in being no account. The
boy goes out in town, stays
all day, in at night and fills LIS
craw from his daddy's table
witthoqt being reproved or
even asked what he .has done
ilunng the day. I heard a
father the other day ask his
little son to come in the house
off the streets, but the big,
smart, young American, about
ten years old, said: ‘Til not do
it till I git ready.” Now I
wanted to s’/ap that boy clear
across town so bad that my
teeth were on edge, But if I
had said a word the old patri¬
arch would have kicked lip a
perfect fury ot dust, notwith¬
standing the grouud was shoe
mouth deep in mud. In a case
like the above, which one
ought to be killed the boy or
the old man? Both. The way
to keep a boy out ot meanness
is to put him to work at some
thipg that will employ his time
so closely that he can’t think
about anything else; and work
of this kind may be found in
town ns well as anywhere.
Don’t be afraid of killing youi
boys at work, but few boys, if
any, ever died from overwork.
The seeds of idleness sown iD
the brains of children, by pa¬
rents, germinate and grow mak¬
ing them vagabonds. Town
boys never let an opportunity
to have fun slip by unimpaov
ed; as a hive of bees will glean
each flower of the garden of its
golden nectar, so do they search
every nook and co ner experi¬
menting on all things alike. A
tin can tied to a dog's tail fly¬
ing in the air, aud an occasion¬
al howl from the excited canine
will tickle a crowd of boys al¬
most out of their boots. This
kind of fun is all right, of course
it is bad on the dog but heal¬
thy for the boys. Well, not¬
withstanding the many faults
possessed by boys, I like them
pretty well, and I love the girls
too. This would be a lonely
old world to live in without
box sand girls, wouldn’t it?

U i-le Johnny Whittier the

is b.itter than his party. This

It.-hows that the president is
best man in tbe country.
From the Loudon World:
Professor Angell, the queen’s
favorite portrait painter, is ex
pected shortly ftt Windsor cas
tie from Vienna. He was over
here in the spring, when In
commenced a “state” portrait
of her majesty, which is now
nearly finished. It is a life
sized picture, and the queen is
represented in her royal rob.es
and wearing the cown. She
stands on a thione, and the
rich folds of the purple train
fall gracefully down the steps,
so that the effect is altogether
most imposing. The queen
wears the garter. This picture
is to be placed in Buckingham
palace with the state poitraits
of her majesty's predecessors,
and as it becomes crown prop

When Rutherford B Hayes
requested the retention of his
friend as Postmaster of one of
the West Virginia post offices,
the President was at first in¬
clined to comply with the re¬
quest. It didn’t take him long
however to reach the conclu^
sion that a Democratic admin¬
istration was under no obliga¬
tion to Mr. Hayes. The fact
that Mr. Hayes enjoyed the
entire patronage of the gover n¬
ment for a period that it ought
to have been enjoyed by a
Democratic President, should
have satisfiied him. Under
the circumstances, his request
tor postmasterships is rather
small business, but then Mr.
Hayes is a rather small man.
The Mormons will make a
great mistake if they allow
themselves to be led by . their
b'shops and elders into armed
resistance to the authority of
the United States. It would
require but little provocation
for our government to wipe
these pestiferous malcontents
from the face of t he earth. Pos
sibly this will be the only way
of solving the Mormon prob¬

Senator liiddleberger is of
the opinion that there are three
parties noxv represented in the
Senate. Iuaiecent editorial
in his paper he said that the
Senate now contains forty Re*,
publicans, thirty-five Demo¬
crats and one Independent. Mr.
liiddleberger evidently intends
to play his one act farce to the
end.
Reports are being circulated

The Cubans will take advan

Some idiot has started the
tale that Hon. Jefferson Davis
contiibuted twenty five cents
to the Grapt memorial fund.
The St. Louis Republican re¬
marks that Mr. Davis never
yet did any thing on the twenty
five cent scale.
The question is asked, what
is impressionism in art? The
reply is that impressionism is
to art what mugwumpism is to
politics.
