THURSDAY, I ONE 24 ISM.
Hassler Mills Items
We get to work occasionally
now lietween showeis, as Rob¬
inson Crusoe says. I’m not
done planting corn the middle
of June, yet with dewberries,
huckleberries and blackberries,
a little goats milk, mtersperced
with eabbage, beans and ’ta
ters we are not as bad off as the
Digger indians, who live oft
grasshoppers in a scarce time.
One of the club met with a
serious loss, CoL Tibbs
brought a whisky guzzling ox
from Dalton and turned him
on the mountain to grass. He
. came in tbe settlement nosing
around and found his jug. He
chewed up the corn cob stop¬
per turned over the jug drank
up what he could out? of pig
tracks, and came very near
meeting the fate of the hog in
tbe mountains of Gsllilee. Fat
was all that saved him.
As I was looking at the mis
- ty mountain top lately, a wea ¬
ry traveller came in view. Not
a commercial drummer nor a
millionaire seeking pleasure,
but a regular tramp, Had
been at work and it made him
sick. Employer could not af¬
ford to take care of him, so he
passed him on without auy
money. He wanted to borrow
a dose of salts, and find some
good Samaritan to tarry with
until well. In his shirt sleeves,
ragged and dirty, humpbacked
squinteyed, with a cancerous
looking sore on his face he was
certainly an object of pity.
Having a Scotch name, red hair
pnd whiskers told very plainly
ancestors came from.

his salts. When he said he
would walk forty miles to vote
for Fain the tumbler was filled
with mountain dew. And when
be said he would vote for Gor¬

presented with tho freedom of

an impostor, but when he
struck the old confed on the

The Bacon and Gordon or¬
gana have by assertions demon
strated them to be two of the
meanest men in Georgia; and if
half that is told on them were
true, it would be a disgrace to
have either of them for Gover¬
nor.
Some weather seer* are pre¬
dicting that nearly every day

About 52 counties have se¬
lected delegates to the guber¬
natorial convention and they
now stand 68 instructed for
Gordon, 54 for Bacon, The
convention will meet on the
28th of July in Atlanta. About
85 counties are yet to act.
President ‘Cleveland will
doubtless be a happier man
since his marriage, as he will
no longer suffer the pang of
sticking his thumb while sew¬
ing on h*s gallus buttons.
Severe storms of hail and
rain are reported flora different
