THURSDAY FEBRUARY *7, • iatM>.
General 'Presentmets.
Georgia Murray County.
We the Grand Jurors chosen
and sworn for the Feby. term
1890 of Murray Superior
Court, beg leave to submit the
following general presentments:
We have, through various com¬
mittees, examined the books of
the Ordinary, Clerk, Shenli,
County Hoard, Tax Collector,
Tax Receiver, County School
Commissioners, County Treas.,
.Justices of Peace, and Notary
Publics and find them all cor¬
rectly and neatly kept. We
find that tovty eight cents on
the hundred dollars was levied
for last year, making the total
amt. $6102,10; that the tax
collector lias collected and paid
over to the county treas. $5491,
69 leaving a bal. ot $610,41 in
his hands to be accounted for,
$500 of which we find in the
collectors hands; we find that
the county Treas. had ou hand
at last term of court $878,11.
Reed, from T. C. since last
term, $5380,79 aggregating
$6264 90 and has paid out on
proper vouchers $4484,81 leav¬
ing a bal. in hands of $1780,09.
We find that the C. S. '0. re
ceived from all sources the to
tal amt. of $3893 30 and was
paid $196,75 for salary and ex¬
penses to the C. S. C. and paid
to teachers $3609,33 amt. over
paid aud due C. S. C. $12,78.
We find there were 38 white
school's and four colored, suc¬
cessfully taught for tour months
with the public funds. We
are triad to find that the schools
.■7>
and school interest are in
prosperous condition, for which
we praise the county school
\)oav<t for their noble work.
We find the Court House in
good condition and, the Jail
and Jailers house in a disgrace¬
ful condition and recommend a
new one built at once, by the
county authorities, Wei fur
tlier recommend it to be fire
proof. We also find the Sta¬
ples corner, owned by the
county in bad condition. We
condemn the county privy and
lecommend the County Com¬
missioners to have a new one
erected and that the same be
kept in a better condition; the
present, one is a nuisance.
We l ave through a commit¬
tee examined into the condition
of the Pauper farm, and find
the same in cdinary condition.
Mr. Charles A. Strawn took
charge of the farm under con¬
tract with the County Com¬
missioners on the first ot Jany.
189i’, and is paid at the rate of
$43,50 per head for the in¬
mates ot the Pauper liouse.
We find eight inmates on hand
at the present time and they
express themselves as being
well pleased with the treat¬
ment given them by Mr. Strawn
In addition to the pr-capita
above mentioned Mr. Strawn
has the use ot all the property
belonging to the farm, We
find the following property on
hand at h? farm. Two mules
00°oue in good condition, worth $225,
wagon L» worth $12,00,
, r.~ r.r. r •
iie.j ne.-s y, 01 La v>,y ^ ..I muig ^
implements worth $15,00, one
milch cow worth $25,00, one
dry cow and yearling, worth
$15,00. also 63 bushels of cot¬
seed. !
ton i
We are furnished with the
followin'* statement of the pro¬
ceeds and expenses of the pau¬
per farm for 1889.
Amt. of cotton raised. $165,00.
Corn oats and fodder. $38,00.
Total income. $903 60,
Expenses paid lor paupers
and farm. $280,38.
Salary of overseer and
wife. $300,00.
Paid for clothing, provisions,
and other necessarie for pau
pers. $117,60.
Total. $698,48.
Deduct income. $203,00.
Balance above, income. $498,88,
We find the comity roads in
good condition with the fol¬
lowing exceptions. In the 10th
Dist. at upper Kings biidge
the abutment of the bridge on
the Murray side has given way
and is in great need of repair,
being dangerous in crossing.
We find that the gate across
the road near the residence of
the late J.D. Iseuhour is an
unnecessary obstruction arid
recommend it‘s removal, and
that the bridge abutment a
bove montioned be lepaiml at
once. We find the road lead
ing from the Cleveland road
to Mitchells bridge in bad con¬
dition. We find the road from
the foot of the hill at the gate
to Sumach creek in exceedingly
bad condition. It is however
very difficult to keep this pov
tion of the road in passable
condition and we recommend
that the county authorities
investigate the matter and
make a proper appropriation
lor this purpose.
Wo recommend that the
county corns, build a new
bridgd across the large ditch
just beyond A. J. Love and
that proper appropriation be
made to keep in repair the
ro-’d between Holly crock at
Leonards bridge, aud the foot
of the hill. We are informed
that $25,00 will be a sufficient
appropriation for this purpose.
jWe branch find that the road a place from at Tibbs the
on
bridge to Dir hams is in bad
condition and dangerous to
cross. We recommend that
said place be repaired if prac¬
ticable and if not, that a bridge
be built.
We find that the terms of
C. C. Ilowell, W. H. Ramsey,
and D- E. Humphreys as
members of the county Board
of Education will expire March
1st. 1890, and we recommend
T. J. Bryant, E. W. Rembert
and C D. Gilbert respetively
as their sucessors.
We find that there is a great
need of more privacy in the po¬
sitions occupied mtbo Superior
Court room bv the Clerk and
Solicitor Gen. The listening
carsjand prying eyes of many
curious people 1 ear and see
too much for the proper ad¬
ministration of justice, under
the present arrangement of the
positions of these two officers
in the com t room- We earn
estly recommend, ns did our
la it Grand Jury, that suitable
railing be placed' around the
bar where. these officers linve
their station?, that proper pri¬
vacy may, be insured to these
officers in the discharge of their
duty daring court.
Wo further recommend (bat tbo
county corns, provide not lesa Ibau
four bibsos for nse of tho couri
r00J;i f or eWe aiing of witnesses and
jurors. Said bibler. to be of good
quality of binding nnd of larger
size than those now in upo.
