HOLLY CREEK RIPPLES
Present A spec r.
The appearance on every
hand at present, -if what we
hearbe true—, indicate that,
unless the near future brings
about a change for the £ better,
Murray county, and especially
the eighth distiict is doomed
to meet with a terrible fate.
Many good cetizens have be¬
come so disgusted with the
present aspects, that they
would “sell out’’ and leave the
county it they could; but it has
come lo pass of late, owing to
Murray's fame for lawlessness
<fec , that men of other sections
who are high minded, lawa
biding and enterprising, say
positively, that they’would not
buy land in Murray county at
ar.y price. It is even said of
the eighth—and probably
there is more'truth than poetry
in it—that they can't hold
court down there without more
or less drunkenness, profanity
and abusive language,—indeed
it lias been alleged that the
court has not only allowed such
but has at times been “parta¬
kers with them”—we hope
however, this is not trne. It
has been further alleged that
the people are not even socia¬
ble, nor intelligent, nor refined
in their manners, tfec; but al¬
ways more or less drinking,
swearing, card playing, med¬
dling with other peoples busi
nos, back-billu£ and abusing
one another. It al these things
be true, I for one, am inclined
to believe that these things are
the trufts of the license that
men have down here to sell,
buvfaud drink whisky, for if
reports be true the boys do
uot only buy from the grocer¬
ies in Gordon eo., but occasion
Jv a ■‘blockade” wagon will

and supply them.
A GENERAL APPEAL,
to r.ll good citizens of the coun¬
ty, but especially of the eighth
district, Gentlemen and fellow
citizens, Dear Sirs:—These
tilings ought not so to be. Is
it possible that the situation is
equal to a’l that is alleged a
gainst us as a people? If so how
long will it be until these
les will be rrmoved and we
able, by adjusting these
tions, to redeem ourselves from
the bad name we now have,
both far and neat? For the
of that which is good, just,
rigbt ana lovely, think on these
things. \W, as a people should
desire to be “famous” but let
our “fame” be for jreace, pros
perity, sobriety, good govern¬
ment, good society, good
schools—either literary, musi¬
cal or Sunday schools—and
good churches.
In short, let us endeavor to
suppress the immoral element
and build upon that tvliieh is
gond. Eff.

Well court is over, some are
pleased and some are sad, but
hope justice has been met to all,
“truth is mighty and will pre¬
vail.”
Well a word or two to broth¬
er II. H. A., and if you will
pardon me I will be brief.
Well you may be a commis
sioner, a mason, an allianeeman,
or “White Cap” I care not
which, if you are true to your
cause you are a gentlemen and
if last week's cap fits, you must
wear it with ease. As to pub¬
buildings, I am interested
feel innocent as I have
my part—paid all the
taxes that have been demanded
of me and am willing to be
doubled taxed to have good
bridges, jail, with cells for
white and black male and fe¬
male, seperate, good jailers
house, such as the county will
uot be ashamed of, fence the
court house, supply the court
house with carpets—and be¬
sides this I will give ten dollars
in a dummy linr from Spring
Place to Dalton, and am wil¬
ling to do all I can for better
churches and better schools
throughout our county. Again
my brother, it I ever met you
with the “White Caps” I failed
to know you if I had recog¬
nized you would have surely
reported to Col A W Fite. 1
do not deny that I am a mem¬
ber of the masonic lodge No
145 and alliance No 1725 and
assented to those good resolu¬
tions but what effect can they
have when the guilty party is
not known- Talk about the
’’deplorabl pity people ca n’ +
tend to their own business.”
I feel it is my duty to talk up
the interest of my county, am
uot ashamed of it, and I say
again, give us good bridges and
roads better church and school
houses and build up society
and make the punishment of
crime more certain and depre¬
dations will stop. I hope the
tax will be put on us this year
to make the public improve¬
ments and not wait, for ’'pro¬
is the thief of time.’
We have a creditable court
we stop here? no
we are going to have good
buildings. Let a man
a floe house and adorn it
the children will be more
